Ribera de Arriba is a Spanish municipality ( concejo in Asturias, corresponds to the municipio in the rest of Spain) in the autonomous region of Asturias . The main town and seat of the municipal administration is Soto de Ribera .
history
In view of the fertility and the mild climate, it is not surprising that the first settlements can be proven as early as the Paleolithic through finds of tools and cave paintings . Remnants of dolmens and ramparts near La Corona, at Picu Llanza, at El Picu Castiello, at Picu Les Pedreres and at Cueto cerca de Sardín also testify to the defensive strength of the "ancient" inhabitants.
The first documentary mention comes from the year 857. A deed of foundation to the Archdiocese of Oviedo shows that Ordoño I handed over the church of San Pedro de Ferreros to the diocese. Another deed of donation from Queen Urraca to Bishop Pelagius of Oviedo dates from 1112 as thanks for his support in the fight against her husband Alfons I. After frequently changing owners, the region was finally bought back in 1537 under Philip II and as one proclaimed an independent community .
