Racomitrioideae is a subfamily within the deciduous moss family Grimmiaceae . It corresponds to the (former) genus Racomitrium in the broader sense, which was published by Ochyra et al. 2003 was divided into four genera.

features

The prostrate or ascending to upright moss plants grow on lime-free or lime-poor subsoil, mainly on rock, and usually form lawns or cushions, which can often be quite extensive. Often the stems have short side shoots. The trunk cross-section is always without a central strand. The lanceolate to less often egg-shaped or tongue-shaped leaves are often equipped with a short to long glass tip. The lamina is usually single-layered, only the leaf margin or the upper leaf area can also be multilayered. The leaf cells are smooth, pseudopapillous or papilose, long and narrow at the bottom, short rectangular to square at the top. Characteristic of this subfamily are the strongly knotty, thickened cell walls, particularly evident in the area of the leaf base; The cells of the upper leaf area also have at least very bulky walls. The rib extends at least to the middle of the leaf, but mostly to the tip of the leaf.

The species are diocesan , breeding bodies are very rare. The mostly long, straight or seldom slightly curved seta is smooth or papilose, the egg-shaped to oblong-cylindrical capsule upright and smooth or indistinctly striped, the lid long beaked, the kalyptra is cap-shaped and often papilose at the tip. The peristome teeth are very often divided almost to the base into two to three filiform and papillary legs, a basement membrane is usually present.

Systematics

The subfamily Racomitrioideae (it corresponds to the former genus Racomitrium in the broader sense) was developed by Ochyra et al. 2003 split into the four genera Bucklandiella , Codriophorus , Niphotrichum and Racomitrium (here in the narrower sense), whereby the new genera correspond to old subgenera or sections. This division is currently only partially carried out in different floras, so the meaning and definition of racomitrium currently differs depending on the source.

The subfamily Racomitrioideae is distributed worldwide, the total number of species is 95 (information on the number of species according to Frey, Fischer & Stech), divided into the four genera:
