Seta (Moose)
Funaria hygrometrica , a moss with very long, red-brown sets and spore capsules. The epithet refers to the hygroscopic movements of the seta.
The seta ( Latin : seta , 'bristle'), colloquially also capsule stem , is the sporophytic stem of the spore capsule in mosses .
In the case of many mosses, the spore capsule is lifted up by a stem in order to ensure better wind spread . If this stalk is formed by the sporophyte, it is called seta, if it is formed by the gametophyte (and is then often green) it is called a pseudopodium . The thickened part at the top of the seta, the capsule neck, is also called the apophysis and is sometimes referred to as the pituitary gland. Sets can often take on additional functions of spreading by performing hygroscopic movements .
