Pseudopodium (moss)
In peat mosses (Sphagnales) and gypsies ( Andreaeaceae ), the sporophyte is lifted up by a pseudopodium ("false stem") so that the ripe spores can be picked up by the wind and spread. The pseudopodium belongs to the gametophyte of the moss.
Mosses in the narrower sense ( Bryidae ) also have an analogous structure, but they belong to the sporophyte and are called Seta ; the “pseudo-” in “pseudopodium” refers to this difference.
The liverworts (Marchantiopsida) form entire stands of gametangia (archegoniophores and antheridiophores). The mature spore capsules are attached to the archegoniophore by a short foot.
