Bucklandiella is a genus of deciduous mosses from the subfamily Racomitrioideae within the family Grimmiaceae .
Generic name
The genus is named after Monte Buckland, a mountain on the Great Tierra del Fuego Island , and the English geologist and paleontologist William Buckland (1784-1856).
features
The small to large plants form loose to dense lawns or cushions, these are green, brown, yellowish, olive-green, more rarely black-brown or occasionally deep black. The upright, prostrate or creeping trunks are usually branched. The leaves are narrowly lanceolate to ovate-triangular, pointed or occasionally blunt, concave below, rutty to keeled above and have entire, single- to multi-layered leaf margins, bent back or rolled up on one or both sides. Usually a short to long hyaline to yellowish-hyaline, smooth to toothed, non-papillary glass tip is present. The simple, not forked rib extends to the tip of the leaf. Leaf-wing cells are not differentiated, the lamina cells are smooth or pseudopapillous. Peristome teeth are relatively short, up to 0.5 millimeters long, lanceolate or triangular and down to the middle, rarely deeper, irregularly divided two or three times, occasionally only perforated or undivided, the seta is smooth.
Systematics
The genus Bucklandiella was (as well as two other genera, Codriophorus and Niphotrichum ) by Ochyra et al. 2003 split off from the genus Racomitrium (in the former broader sense). This division is currently only partially implemented in various floras; In the list of species below, the former species names that are currently still often used are therefore also given in brackets.
Species list
The cosmopolitan genus Bucklandiella counts 58 species worldwide. Species found in Germany, Austria and Switzerland are:
- Bucklandiella affinis ( Racomitrium affine )
- Bucklandiella heterosticha ( Racomitrium heterostichum )
- Bucklandiella macounii ( Racomitrium macounii )
- Bucklandiella microcarpa ( Racomitrium microcarpon )
- Bucklandiella nivalis ( Racomitrium nivale )
- Bucklandiella obtusa ( Racomitrium obtusum )
- Bucklandiella sudetica ( Racomitrium sudeticum )
