Bucklandiella macounii ( Syn .: Racomitrium macounii Kindb., German Macoun-Zackenmützenmoos ) is a deciduous moss - species from the family Grimmiaceae .

features

The medium-sized moss plants form loose to dense, reddish green, olive green to brownish, inside reddish brown to blackish cushions or lawns. The prostrate to upright, up to 6 centimeters long stems are simple or not very branched. The leaves are dry and upright, straight to clearly twisted, moist upright to protruding, narrowly lanceolate, about 0.5 to 0.8 millimeters wide and 2.2 to 3 millimeters long and gradually narrowing to the tip. They usually have a short, up to 0.2 mm long, stiff, elongated round, reddish or yellowish hyaline, spiky, non-sagging glass tip. The leaf margins are bent back on at least one side and in the middle and upper leaf area in the outer two to four cell rows two, sometimes three-cell layers.

The robust rib, which is convex on the underside, extends to the tip of the leaf. In the lower part it is 60 to 100 (150) µm wide, four-celled, ventrally (on top) with 3 to 6 larger cells; in the upper part 40 to 70 µm wide, three or four cell layers, with (2) 3 to 5 cells on the upper side.

The lamina cells are rectangular at the base of the leaf and have nodular, thickened walls; in the central leaf area they are irregular isodiametric to short-rectangular. Leaf-wing cells are not particularly differentiated. The basal leaf margin shows 15 to 40 short, more or less clearly transparent, not or not very bulged cells.

The brown seta is 4 to 7 millimeters long, the capsule, which is also brown, is slightly glossy and ovoid-cylindrical, the lid is convex-conical to short beaked. The lanceolate peristome teeth are 330 to 450 µm long and are irregularly divided into one to three branches or perforated or undivided from a fairly short basement membrane. Spores are 12 to 14 µm in size.

Subspecies

From Buck Landi Ella macounii there are two subspecies:

  • Bucklandiella macounii (childb.) Bednarek-Ochyra & Ochyra subsp. macounii: Plants quite strong, with a glass tip up to 0.1 millimeters long and strongly prickly, with a wider (80 µm and more) rib at the base, peristome teeth up to 330 µm long.
  • Bucklandiella macounii subsp. alpina (E. Lawton) Bednarek-Ochyra & Ochyra: less vigorous plants, glass tip up to 0.2 millimeters long and moderately prickly, rib at the base narrower (60 to 85 µm), peristome teeth 380 to 450 µm long.

Location claims and distribution

The moss grows in montane to subalpine altitudes on lime-free to slightly calcareous rock in and along streams, on waterfalls and in snow valleys, further on wet tundra-like wasteland or sometimes on sandy loam.

It occurs in Europe, North America and in parts of Asia (Northeast Turkey, Japan). In Germany, Austria and Switzerland the occurrences are limited to the Alps, in Germany it is extremely rare.
