Georg Philippi

Georg Philippi (born August 12, 1936 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † July 6, 2010 ) was a German botanist . His botanical author abbreviation is " G.Phil. ".

Life

Georg Philippi grew up in Freiburg, where he passed the Abitur in 1955 at the Kepler Gymnasium . Even as a schoolboy he was interested in plants and already began to deal with mosses during this time. During his vacation in Karlsruhe, he made contact with the local museum director Erich Oberdorfer , who won him over to plant sociology. Philippi and his brother, who was also interested in botanical studies, exchanged ideas with well-known bryologists such as Karl Müller and Theodor Herzog , one of whom worked in Freiburg, the other, like the two brothers, was born in Freiburg. Philippi was also a regular guest at the Freiburg Natural History Museum , where its director Martin Schnetter inspired him, among other things, for other aspects of biology, such as ornithology .

From 1955 Philippi studied biology, chemistry and mathematics at the University of Freiburg and at the University of Göttingen . In 1961 he passed the state examination for teaching and was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. PhD.

Before Erich Oberdorfer appointed him as a research assistant at the State Museum for Natural History Karlsruhe in Karlsruhe in 1964 , he was a student trainee in Lahr . In 1974 Philippi was appointed chief curator and head of the botanical department in Karlsruhe. In 1980 he completed his habilitation at the University of Karlsruhe , where he was appointed adjunct professor in 1988.

Philippi was married to a former colleague of the Göttingen botanist Franz Firbas , who was a well-known mycologist. He had two daughters. Philippi is buried in the main cemetery in Karlsruhe .

General

Philippi, together with Oskar Sebald , Siegmund Seybold and Arno Wörz, is co-editor and author of the work The Ferns and Flowering Plants Baden-Württemberg , Volume 1–8, Stuttgart 1990–1998.

Plant sociology

Philippi, who was won over by Erich Oberdorfer for plant sociology, was an outspoken practitioner in this field. He dealt with the sociology of reed communities, pipe grass meadows, flat moors and dwarf rush communities. As an excellent expert on mosses, he had already undertaken plant sociological research in flat and transitional moors.

The results of his many years of knowledge of these vegetation units led him to make contributions to the following syntaxa in the second edition of the South German Plant Associations published by Erich Oberdorfer :

  • Spring corridor societies and forest swamps (class Montio-Cardaminetea )
  • Nordic intermoor and Schlenken societies (order Scheuchzerietalia palustris )
  • Flat moor communities on predominantly lime-poor locations (order Caricetalia fuscae )
  • Reeds and large sedge societies (class Phragmitetea )
  • Dwarf rush societies (class Isoeto-Nanojuncetea )

He also processed vegetation maps 1: 25,000 for the area of measuring table sheets or was involved in the processing:

Philippi also worked on the map of potential natural vegetation in Baden-Württemberg (1974) published by Erich Oberdorfer and Theo Müller .

Moss science

In 1956 Georg Philippi published his first work on some moss societies in the Black Forest and the Rhine Plain, the basics of which he had already explored as a schoolboy. In this work he describes societies of aquatic mosses, of mosses on silicate rocks and of earth mosses. In doing so, he systematically assigned the societies to certain syntaxa or described new moss societies. Examples are:

  • Water moss societies (order Leptodictyetalia riparii Philippi 1956)
  • Moss communities of dry silicate rock (order Racomitrietalia heterostichi Philippi 1956)
  • Moss societies of rotten wood (Association Novellion curvifolia Philippi 1956)

In addition to the socialization of mosses, Philippi always had the ecology of the mosses in mind. In his examination thesis, which was supervised by bryologist and plant physiologist Martin Bopp , an employee at Friedrich Oehlkers ' chair , he dealt with the topic " The germination development of some liverworts in acidic substrates as a function of pH value ". In his dissertation " Sociological and experimental-ecological investigations on mosses, acidic soil, rotten wood and raw humus ", his extensive knowledge of this family of plants was shown.

During his time as head of the botanical department at the museum in Karlsruhe, he worked on the mosses and vegetation for several area monographs, for the following areas:

  • Wutachschlucht (1971); The moss vegetation of the Wutach Gorge
  • Taubergießen (1974); The moss vegetation of the Taubergießen reserve near Kappel-Oberhausen
  • Russheimer Altrhein (1978); The vegetation of the old Rhine area near Rußheim ; (together with Günther Müller): Problems and objectives of nature conservation in the area of the Rußheimer Altrhein ; How do I get to know the Rußheimer Altrhein and Elisabethenwörth nature reserve? Excursion suggestions
  • Buchswald near Grenzach (1979); Moss flora and moss vegetation of the box forest near Grenzach-Wyhlen
  • Belchen (1989); The plant communities of the Belchen area in the Black Forest
  • Bannwald "Conventwald" near Freiburg (2004); Mosses from the "Conventwald" forest
  • Bannwälder "Hechtsgraben" and "Weisweiler Rheinwald" near Weisweil (2005); Moss flora and moss vegetation in the Bannwälder near Weisweil
  • Bannwälder in Hagenschieß near Pforzheim (2005); Flora and vegetation

In 1977 he published the first version of the " Red List of Mosses in Baden-Württemberg " and also edited the second version in 1984. His many years of knowledge of the distribution, sociology and ecology of the plants in Baden-Württemberg culminated in the multi-volume he co-edited Works on species protection: " The ferns and flowering plants of Baden-Württemberg " and " The mosses of Baden-Württemberg ".

natural reserve

Philippi has been a volunteer nature conservation officer for the city of Karlsruhe since 1987 and a member of the nature conservation advisory board. In 2007, after 20 years of service, Mayor Heinz Fenrich thanked him for his commitment. Until recently, Philippi led botanical excursions in the Karlsruhe region, e. B. in the Rhine meadows and in the alluvial forest.
