Albert Reif

Albert Reif (born September 30, 1951 in Ansbach ) is a German vegetation ecologist and was a professor at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg until 2018 .

Life

After primary school, Reif attended the "Carolinum grammar school" in Ansbach until 1971 and then studied biology and chemistry at the University of Würzburg from 1971 to 1978 . In 1978 he passed the state examination and from 1978 to 1982 was a research assistant at the Institute for Plant Ecology at the University of Bayreuth with Ernst-Detlef Schulze .

In Bayreuth, Reif did research on the vegetation of the hedges in Northern Bavaria and received his doctorate with a dissertation on this subject in 1982. After a research stay at the Forest Research Institute in Christchurch , New Zealand , he returned to Bayreuth and was employed there as an academic adviser. In 1988 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on "Vegetation of the Conifer-Broadleaved Hardwood Forests of South Island, New Zealand". In 1989 he was appointed professor for forest vegetation and geography at the Institute for Silviculture at the University of Freiburg , where he took over the management of the department. From 1993 to 1997, Reif was also acting head of the Institute for Land Care at the University of Freiburg. In the course of the reorganization of the Faculty for Environment and Natural Resources, which also includes the then Institute for Silviculture (now “Professorship for Silviculture”), in 2013 Reif received his own professorship for site and vegetation science. Albert Reif retired in September 2018.

Albert Reif was for many years on the board of the Natural Research Society in Freiburg , currently he is chairman of the Baden State Association for Natural History and Nature Conservation and since his retirement he has been the nature conservation officer of the Kaiserstuhl .

The main research areas of Reif are a. Hedges and forest edges, the forest development after storm thrown, site studies on the dry line of the red beech and the regeneration of the oak , the development of cultivated landscapes v. a. in Romania , the influence of forest management on the natural balance and internationally u. a. nor the vegetation of the forests of Venezuela and New Zealand . Another essential research focus is the topics of nature conservation, in particular nature conservation assessment with a strong application focus.
