Otti Wilmanns

Ottilie Wilmanns (born October 24, 1928 in Bremen ) is a German botanist and professor emeritus in the Faculty of Biology at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg .

Live and act

Otti Wilmanns comes from an old Hanseatic family of merchants and scholars and grew up in Bremen. Due to the war, she spent part of her school days in Tuttlingen . After graduating from high school, Otti Wilmanns began an agricultural apprenticeship on a farm in the Lake Constance hinterland in August 1948 before starting university in Tübingen in July 1949 . She studied biology , geology and chemistry in Tübingen and Göttingen . Influential teachers were Walter Zimmermann , Konrad Buchwald and the geologists Georg Wagner and Eugen Seibold .

In 1955, she completed her studies with a state examination for higher education and a doctorate with a thesis on the plant communities and locations of the " Greuthau " nature reserve and its surroundings .

After an assistantship and habilitation in botany, she worked from 1961 as a scientific adviser to the chair for botany at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , where she represented the subjects of geobotany and systematics . In 1975 she was appointed to the newly created chair for geobotany. Otti Wilmanns retired in 1996.

Her research concerns all facets of plant sociology , especially site ecology and the dynamics of vegetation . Her scientific work focuses on the following topics:

  • Research into epiphytes - synusia , especially of lichen communities on tree trunks, which also led to theoretical considerations on plant sociology and the classification of vegetation units and synusia
  • Investigations into landscape and vegetation change using the example of different plant communities in the Swabian Alb , in the Black Forest and in the Kaiserstuhl
  • Investigations of vegetation complexes, for example using the example of redesigned wine-growing landscapes of the Kaiserstuhl, in which she was able to demonstrate, based on the types of vegetation , that the redesigned area was significantly biologically impoverished.
  • Otti Willmanns was able to gain groundbreaking insights into the processes of succession in the vegetation using the example of long-term permanent observations on the Kaiserstuhl grasslands .

Together with Günther Osche , Otti Wilmanns gave the research of the interaction between flora and fauna and thus the young discipline of biocenology a major boost.

In her investigations and above all in the training of the students, she placed great emphasis on nature conservation-oriented basic research as well as on the practical application of plant-sociological and biocenological working methods.

After an exemplary mapping of the Kaiserstuhl biotopes carried out in 1973 together with Helga Rasbach, she initiated the "Pilot Study Biotope Mapping Baden-Württemberg" in 1976 and implemented it with her employees and students as a model for the southern Baden region. The mapping method she developed was subsequently adopted by the then State Institute for Environmental Protection for biotope mapping throughout the country.

After her retirement, Otti Wilmanns dealt among other things with the settlement history of the Central Black Forest . As a result of her research, she showed in a publication in 2009 that Gallo Romans had lived in the area of the rivers Kinzig and Elz by analyzing the linguistic roots of field names and substantiating her thesis with landscape-ecological-geobotanical facts in the area. On the basis of climatic data, the geological conditions and the vegetation, she was able to prove a particularly favorable location for the early settlements.

Otti Wilmanns is a great role model as a university teacher for several generations of students. She has dealt with the didactics and methodology of botanical and landscape excursions in several publications. One example is her Black Forest excursion guide , published in 2001 , in which she uses 45 hiking routes to convey the landscape and vegetation of the Black Forest.

To support young researchers in the field of plant sociology, she founded the Otti-Wilmanns Foundation .
