Today's Black Forest Association ( SWV for short ) was created in 1934 from the merger of the Baden Black Forest Association, founded in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1864 , and the Württemberg Black Forest Association, founded in Stuttgart in 1884 . A first attempt to merge the two clubs failed in 1906. The union finally took place in 1934 following an order from the Reich Wanderführer , according to which only one hiking club was allowed to exist in each landscape area.

The Black Forest Association is the oldest mountain and hiking association in Germany.

history

Black Forest Association of Baden

The Badischer Schwarzwaldverein was founded on June 8th, 1864 as a Baden association of industrialists and innkeepers in the Renzschen Felsenkeller in Freiburg. In 1880 there were 500 members. The association received significant growth during the presidency of Wilhelm Jakob Behaghel . In 1892 a general meeting took place in Todtnau. In 1913 the association had 72 sections with 12,000 members. In the year it was founded, the Badische Schwarzwaldverein commissioned Carl Wilhelm Schnars to write a Black Forest guide, which had numerous editions up to 1928. He published a set of maps with 11 sheets, as well as the monthly sheets of the Baden Black Forest Association; also the song book of the Badischer Schwarzwaldverein, with the famous folk song by Ludwig Auerbach .

Württemberg Black Forest Association

The Württemberg Black Forest Association was founded on November 23, 1884 in the Zach restaurant in Stuttgart . The first chairman was Baron von Bätzner. The driving force was the building supervisor Rheinhard, the 1st chairman from 1887 to 1889. From the beginning his field of work was the Württemberg part of the Black Forest with its foreland up to the Neckar . In particular, he was responsible for looking after the east route from Pforzheim to Schaffhausen , established in 1903 , while the middle route and the west route were taken care of by the Black Forest Association of Baden. When it merged with the Baden Black Forest Association in 1934, the association consisted of 58 local groups. The number of members was 11,500 in 1913, the annual fee was 3 marks. The Black Forest Guide by Julius Wais (1909), the monthly sheets "Aus dem Schwarzwald" (since 1893), the New Map of the Württemberg Black Forest in nine sheets, a five-color map of the elevation (the first map of the Württemberg Association 1886 , seven years before the first card of the Badischer Verein), the songbook of the Württemberg Black Forest Association and various other publications.

organization

The Black Forest Association consists of the main association (full name Schwarzwaldverein -Hauptverein - eV ), whose members are 230 independent local associations. The local associations are organized in 16 districts and have a total of almost 65,000 members. The executive committee of the main association has three members; Georg Keller , the former mayor of Rickenbach , has been president since 2013 . In addition to the Presidium, there are nine main control rooms, who are responsible for certain topics, and the main office, which is staffed full-time. The main association is based in Freiburg im Breisgau, and is entered in the register of associations at the local court (VR 452).

Hiking trail supervision

Hiking trail markings by the Black Forest Association

The Black Forest Association maintains a network of hiking trails with a length of more than 23,000 km, with 14,500 signpost locations in over 300 communities, which extends over the entire Black Forest and its adjacent regions. In addition to the Black Forest, the association is also responsible for the hiking trails in the western Lake Constance area, which are located in the (formerly) Baden area.

The entertainment is done exclusively by volunteers. The so-called main hiking trails ( Westweg , Mittelweg and Ostweg ) run in a north-south direction; in addition there are the Kandelhöhenweg and the Ortenau Wine Trail in the west and the Gäurandweg in the east. The “cross paths” run in an east-west direction: Cross path Gengenbach – Alpirsbach , cross path Rottweil – Lahr , cross path Freiburg – Bodensee , Hotzenwaldquer path and others. In the 1990s, a long-distance cycle path was added, which begins in Karlsruhe, runs parallel to Westweg in sections and ends in Basel. The youngest hiking trail, which is supported by the Black Forest Association, is the Schluchtensteig, opened in 2008 in the southern Black Forest.

All paths are marked with a diamond. Regional hiking trails are marked with a blue diamond, local ones with a yellow diamond. The main hiking trails are marked with different diamonds.
