The two valleys climbing is a 108 km long circular route and predicate trail with 4120 meters of altitude in five stages through the Black Forest around the Elztal and Simonswälder Valley with start and finish in Waldkirch .

history

The Zweälersteig was certified on January 13th, 2011 by the Association of German Mountain and Hiking Associations as a "Quality Trail Wanderable Germany" and officially opened on May 21st, 2011. In January 2014, it successfully passed the three-year test.

Brief description

The Zweälersteig leads from Waldkirch along the ridge between the Glottertal and the Elztal up to the Kandel, past the Schwarzenburg ruins and the Thomashütte above the small Kandelfelsens.

The route then runs on a plateau of the Kandel, the Platte, slightly downhill to Lake Balaton. The Zweribach Falls are located on a rocky and steep downhill section of the way in the upper Simonswäldertal . From there it goes through the pond gorge steeply up to the Hintereck. The route from the Spitzen Stein to the Simonswäldertal is one of the most difficult sections of the Zweiälersteig.

From the community of Simonswald , the path leads up again to the Hörnleberg with its pilgrimage chapel. Then it goes on on a 1000  m long, narrow high path along the peaks of Tafelbühl, Braunhörnle, Breitbühl and the Yacher Höhe to Rohrhardsberg . After the Gschasifelsen and the Gschasikopf have been passed, the route from the Dorfer Kapf with the Kapfhütte below reaches the elongated Oberprechtal .

The Zweälersteig climbs up again from the Oberprechtal and meets the Westweg and the Rottweil – Lahr crossroad near the Huberfelsen . The further course of the route follows the cross path to the northwest, runs along the Finsterkapf, Flachenberg and Heidburg and meets the Kandelhöhenweg at the northernmost point at Höhenhäuser .

The last and promising stretch back to Waldkirch largely corresponds to the Kandelhöhenweg. There are the Hünersedelturm , the Schillingerberg and the Eckleberg. Then the Gscheid Pass is crossed, and at the end the Zweälersteig meets the Kastelburg above Waldkirch.

Individual sights such as the Schwarzenburg , the chapel on the Hörnleberg , the Siebenfelsen and the Hünersedelturm are not located directly on the Zweiälersteig. However, these goals are achieved very quickly.

51% of the path is natural, 48% has other ground and only 1% is asphalted. The Zweälersteig is well marked by the local groups of the Black Forest Association at crossroads with signposts and between the sections with uniform signposts with a symbol of a stylized heart on a green diamond and can therefore be walked in both directions without a map.

All altitude information is in zero normal altitude .

The best seasons for the hike are spring through autumn. Even if the Zweälersteig is basically accessible all year round, depending on the location and altitude, some sections of the first three stages can be icy and impassable.

Path by the small Kandelfelsen below the Thomashütte

The first stage from Waldkirch up to the Kandel pyramid runs along the ridge between the Glottertal and the Elztal . It is densely wooded and leads partly on narrow, steeper and rocky paths.

The stage begins at the Waldkirch train station, crosses the Elz and leads through the city via the market square, past the Stadtrainsee and the Black Forest zoo, on a 1.1 kilometer forest nature trail, the Senses Trail, to a treetop trail . After Fohrenbühl ( 435  m ), the path becomes narrower and steeper for a short stretch to Kienzleebel ( 539  m ), the other 1 kilometer long, flatter stretch leads to the Schwarzenberghütte ( Lage ) . The Schwarzenburg ruin is located to the north on the right-hand side of the road and enables a panorama of the Rhine plain over to the Kastelburg and up to the large Kandelfelsen.

The stations Am Kranzkopf ( 762  m ) and Gullerkopf ( 815  m ) are reached along the Rudi-Kapp-Weg and allow a view of the valley and towards the northern Black Forest. From the Moosbühl the route to the Thomashütte develops into a narrow path; under the small Kandelfelsen it becomes steep and rocky like a serpentine. The Thomashütte ( location ) , located like an eagle's nest high above the Glottertal and directly above the small Kandelfelsen, offers a wide panoramic view of St. Peter , the Feldberg , the Schauinsland and the Rhine plain with the Kaiserstuhl .

From the hut, the path is a little less steep and mostly wider. Above the Hoschgetkreuz ( 1131  m ), a detour to the Hessfelsele and the large Kandelfelsen ( Lage ) is possible. The highest point of the Zweälersteig, the Kandel pyramid, is finally reached after about 0.8 kilometers. The Gasthaus Kandel and a bus stop are within sight after about 0.5 kilometers slightly downhill.

Directions

The second stage begins in the immediate vicinity of the Kandelhotel at the signpost Tüchlebank ( Lage ) , where you first follow the Kandelhöhenweg to Rohrallmend. The route is based on the road leading into the Glottertal , where the Zweälersteig crosses it after 2 kilometers at the Schwerhütte in the direction of the Hornkopf and the Kandelplatte.

The route continues through the horn forest on wide forest paths along the waypoints Dreispitz ( 1067  m ), Kaltenbrunnen ( 1050  m ) and Militärschlag ( 1070  m ) to Bei der Bockhornhütte ( 1025  m ) and to the south at Althäuslehof ( Lage ) reaches the panoramic plateau of Kandel plateau . From here a view of the Simonswäldertal with the hut located above on the Hintereck is possible, a later stage point. The Zweälersteig now leads down a paved road down the Platte, past the Plattenhof ( location ) and Lake Balaton, which was created as an upper basin for the Zweribachwerk .

Entry to the Zweribach Falls

The entrance ( location ) begins below the Langeckerhof through a forest and a nature reserve down to the Zweribach Falls and into the upper Simonswäldertal. The path becomes increasingly steep and rocky in serpentines, and is partly still secured by holding ropes. The waterfalls are crossed by a small bridge between the upper and middle tier. After leaving the forest along the lower level of the falls, you will reach a refuge with a place to eat. This is where the former Brunnenhof ( location ) burned down in 1984 .

The route leads again on a wider path past the Bruggerhof to a crossroads above the Haldenschwarzhof, where the Zweälersteig meets the cross path Black Forest – Kaiserstuhl – Rhine and follows it into the pond gorge . Until then, the route is mostly paved and leads past the Luxenhof ( 585  m ) and the Vitenhof ( 548  m ) to the district road 5105, where it is crossed at the Wildgutach-Pfaffmühle district.

Rocks in the pond gorge

The pond gorge is located in a forest. The 1 kilometer long route becomes narrower, steeper and more rocky and follows the course of the Teichbach until after a few rocky steps a high, massive rock is reached ( location ) . At this crossroads, the Black Forest – Kaiserstuhl – Rhine path is oriented towards Gütenbach along the course of the stream. The Zweiälersteig, on the other hand, branches off to the left on the rock towards Hintereck, remains on a narrow path and crosses a rock slope that slopes steeply into the gorge. From Vitenbühl ( 700  m ) it goes up to the right, where the state road 173 from the Simonswäldertal to Gütenbach has to be crossed. After a good kilometer on the wide Probstwaldweg, steep serpentines have to be overcome after the sign for the Wäldersteig ( 865  m ) up to the Hintereck ( Lage ) .

The way down into the Simonswäldertal to the Engel inn from the Spitzen Stein and past the Saulache is one of the most difficult sections of the entire Zweiälersteig and overcomes 500 meters in altitude over a distance of 4 kilometers. A good kilometer from the Hintereck is the tip of Stein ( Lage ) , a former Celtic sacrificial site. Above the signpost, there is a broad view of the valley as far as the Hörnleberg . At the lower tip of Stein the path becomes very steep for a section, runs in tight serpentines partly over and along rocks provided with moss, but is well signposted with the marker. The route remains steep and mostly narrow up to and past the Saulache, only to become wider at the lower Kilpen ( 505  m ). The last bit to the inn and a bus stop is paved. The other 6 kilometers of the route to Simonswald are mainly based on the road.

Directions

The third stage of the Zweälersteig begins in Simonswald at Sägplatz ( Lage ) near the Kronenmühle and the Schlossmühle. First he  orients himself on the district road 5106 past the cemetery in the direction of Haslach, before later turning left into the street Am Sommerberg through a residential area. From the Hesshackenweg signpost ( 445  m ), the path leads steeply in the forest and partly in serpentines up to about 100 meters in altitude, where after about 500 m it is flatter again and to the Elme signpost ( 558  m ). From there, a station path with crosses and numerous wayside shrines is about 3 km up to the chapel on the Hörnleberg . After approx. 2.5 km the Hörnlepfad ( 850  m ) and after another steep climb (approx. 400 m) the chapel on the Hörnleberg ( 907  m ) is reached.

View from the Rohrhardsberg

The way to Tafelbühl often runs on a small, steeper, rooty and sometimes stony path. This hiking trail was already marked with a blue diamond on a white background on the direct route to Rohrhardsberg before the opening of the Zweälersteig . Shortly before the Tafelbühl ( Yacher Zinken nature reserve ) you can see the Elz Valley from a small open space, before the path meets the Yacher Höhenweg. From the Tafelbühl you can see the Simonswald community and the Kandel in the background, where it goes down again after about 400 m to the Dorerbühl hut. The path that now runs in the nature reserves of Yacher Zinken and Kostgefäll takes a small and steep detour over the Braunhörnle ( 1134  m ) on the way to Rohrhardsberg . On the Braunhörnle there is a large summit cross with a small metal box attached and a summit book in it . Furthermore, numerous seating options offer a panorama of the Elz Valley and far towards the northern Black Forest.

View from the Gschasifelsen into the Elz Valley with the Hörnleberg

At Breitbühl ( 1060  m ) with a clearing, the Zweälersteig meets the Yacher Höhenweg again. After approx. 800 m hike on a partly stony ascent, the Yacher Höhe ( 1110  m ) is reached. The Rohrhardsberg summit, located in the forest, is circled via the scenic stations Heiliggeistloch ( 1120  m ) and Schwedenschanze ( 1130  m ). From Rohrhardsberg it is about 5.5 km to the Martinskapelle, with a connection to the Westweg . After the forest-free descent down to the wayside cross Am Schlagbaum ( 1000  m ), the route first leads to the waypoint Ober den Siebenfelsen ( 976  m ), from where a detour to Siebenfelsen ( Lage ) is possible in about 800 meters. The hiking trail leads further north in the direction of Gschasikopf, along the waypoints Zimmereck ( 957  m ), Lache ( 971  m ) and Wolfgrube ( 964  m ). At the Wolfsgrubenhütte the path branches off to the left and leads back on smaller paths to the Gschasifelsen ( Lage ) , with a very small refuge on the path and a view of the Elz Valley and Hörnleberg.

After about 3.5 km and mostly slightly downhill, you reach the Kapfhütte, which is served on some days. The view from there extends into the northern Black Forest and partly into the Kinzig valley . The immediate descent from the Kapfhütte is partly quite steep on a narrow path, later it is a little flatter and runs on wider forest paths. The further course of the route in the Oberprechtal to the district of Wittenbach is steeper again.

The fourth stage begins in the Oberprechtal in the district of Wittenbach. The path leads into the Wittenbächletal, along the Hirschfelsen and steeply up to the Hirzdobel, where it crosses the Westweg and the Rottweil – Lahr crossroad. From a natural monument , the Huberfelsen , located a short distance on the high path, one has a view of the adjoining valleys. The path continues to the highest point of this stage, the Prechtaler Schanze. Here the Zweälersteig leaves the Westweg and the Schwarzwald-Querweg to the left to the Pfauenfelsen, with a view far below into the Elztal. It goes down and around the Pfauen to the Landwassereck, where the road 107 is crossed, which connects the Elztal with the Gutach valley. The Zweälersteig runs south-west above the Oberprechtal, where forest and wide clearings alternate to the stations Burggraben ( 638  m ), Kirchberg ( 630  m ), Lehrscheide ( 618  m ) and Bösmatte ( 660  m ). To the north of the Finsterkopf, the sometimes narrow and root-laden path down to the Heidburg Pass opens up a panorama towards the northern Black Forest. At the scenic Flachenberg, the Zweälersteig meets the Große Hansjakobweg and follows it past the Heidburg via Biereck to the destination of the Höhenhäuser stage .

The Zweälersteig at Schwarzenberg

The last stage leads from Höhenhäuser largely on the Kandelhöhenweg south back to Waldkirch. Along the ridge there are numerous views of the various side valleys and far into the Rhine valley to the Kaiserstuhl and the Vosges .

From Höhenhäuser, past the Schwabenkreuz, the Schutter spring is reached after 1.5 kilometers . A recommended detour is the Hünersedelturm , which can be reached after 1 kilometer from the sign at Bei den Dürrhöfen . The Zweälersteig leaves the Kandelhöhenweg at the Kreuzmoos hiking home for 3 kilometers and branches off to the right, down to the Paulyhof, through a forest area to the Spiessberg ( 627  m ), up to the Scheerberg and Schillinger Berg, where the Kandelhöhenweg is crossed again. It is now increasingly downhill with always charming views to Eckleberg and Tännlebühl ( 580  m ) in the direction of Gscheid. At the pass and at a road crossing there is a large hiking board with a map, elevation profile and brief information about the Zweiälersteig. From Hohtann Kandelblick, with a view of the Kandel , Freiburg and Schönberg , the trail increasingly runs through wooded areas past the Kastelburg down to Waldkirch to the train station.
