The Kostgefäll is a high valley on the upper reaches of the Haslachsimonswälder brook flowing to the Wilden Gutach and the name of the group of individual farms located in it. It gave its name to the nature reserve that extends beyond it and is located in the Upper Black Forest natural area in Baden-Württemberg .

The nature reserve is located in the municipality of Simonswald in the Emmendingen district in Baden-Württemberg. The area is between the Haslachsimonswald west-southwest, the Braunhörnle ( 1134  m above sea  level ) northwest, the Rohrhardsberg ( 1153.2  m above sea  level ) northeast, the Obereck ( 1178.2  m above sea level ) south-southeast and the Ibichkopf ( 1145.4  m above sea level ) to the south. In the north, near the path of the Zweälersteig and the Yacher Höhenweg, it seamlessly approaches the Yacher Zinken nature reserve .

Characteristics

The area was designated as a nature reserve by ordinance on November 17, 1997 and is listed under the protected area number 3.243 at the Freiburg Regional Council. It has an area of ​​447.5 hectares and is classified in IUCN Category IV, a biotope and species protection area. The WDPA-ID is 164216 and corresponds to the European CDDA code and the EUNIS number.

The main protection purpose is the preservation of the area as a large, structure and species-rich complex of different natural habitats such as forests, meadows, pastures and wetlands as well as a habitat for a variety of endangered, partly endangered animal and plant species, including both subalpine and subalpine warmth-loving species.
