geography

The nature reserve is located in the central Black Forest in a valley in the area of the municipality of Biederbach in the Emmendingen district in Baden-Württemberg. It is located about 1.1 km southwest of the Höhenhäuser district on Landstrasse 101 and about 2.2 km east of the Schweighausen district of the community of Schuttertal and in the immediate vicinity of the Schwabenkreuz.

Characteristics

The area was designated as a nature reserve by ordinance on September 25, 1979 by the Freiburg Regional Council and has an area of 6.9 hectares. It is listed under the protected area number 3.106 and is classified in IUCN Category IV, a biotope and species protection area. The CDDA code is 81448 and also corresponds to the WDPA ID .

The main protection purpose is the preservation of a flat moor as a habitat for a rare wetland flora and as a part of the landscape with a special character, which contributes to the diversity and beauty of the landscape.

history

The meadows and pastures were created in the Gewann Brai as a result of clearing the forest and through agriculture, without which mainly ash and black alder next to the spruce would dominate this area. The resulting grassland surrounding the protected area could be used intensively. One factor for the development of the protected area is the sloping terrain, the remote location, the soils that are difficult to drive on due to wetness and the extensive use here . Therefore, a mosaic of many species could be preserved.

geology

The impermeable paragneiss is found very often as a rocky subsurface in the Black Forest, in combination with the depression in the area, the large amounts of precipitation and the resulting high water level is characteristic of the flora and fauna here.

Flora and fauna

Autumn rootwort (Spiranthes spiralis)

The protected area is a wet meadow area traversed by a dense system of ditches . It is a conglomerate of fen companies , meadows of Spitz rushes , bristle grass and oat grass and habitat for rare plants such. B. for the endangered autumn rootwort , the late-blooming native orchid species .

The meager wet meadows take up most of the area and are habitat for the swamp Pippau , the swamp horn clover , the water ragwort , the snake knotweed and the common devil bite .

Flower of the cuckoo carnation

The fen communities with the fever clover , the round-leaved sundew and the heart leaf can be found in even wetter areas and sometimes also in the trenches. Peat mosses are represented in small areas.

The somewhat drier and slightly fertilized areas are characterized by the woolly honeydew grass , the common sorrel , the field chervil , the cuckoo's light carnation and the marsh marigold .

The bristle grass and the hawkweed indicate a poor and shallow location, whereas a vegetation of sedges and rushes shows up in very wet areas.

hike

Two long-distance hiking trails of the Black Forest Association , the Kandelhöhenweg and the Zweälersteig , lead past a field cross , the Swabian Cross , on the western edge of the nature reserve .
