The Johanniter forest is a natural and landscape conservation area in the natural area Offenburg Rhine valley in Baden-Wuerttemberg . It is a near-natural alluvial forest with a composition of tree species appropriate to the location and the habitat of a bird world that is worthy of protection.

The nature reserve is located on the territory of the municipalities of Kenzingen and Rheinhausen in the districts of Kenzingen and Oberhausen in the district of Emmendingen in Baden-Württemberg. It is 3.5 kilometers southwest of Herbolzheim , just under three kilometers northwest of Kenzingen and borders immediately to the west on federal motorway 5 .

The forest area with the nature reserve forms the southern end of the nature reserve Elzwiesen with a short distance and lies between the Elz in the north and the Leopold Canal in the south, a canal for flood relief of the Elz.

Characteristics

The area was designated as a nature reserve by ordinance on September 27, 1979 and is listed under the protected area number 3.110 at the Freiburg Regional Council. It has an area of ​​57.5 hectares and is classified in IUCN Category IV, a biotope and species protection area. The WDPA ID is 82018 and corresponds to the European CDDA code and the EUNIS no.

The main protection purpose "is the preservation of the Johanniter Forest and its immediate surroundings as a habitat, in particular as a breeding and feeding area for a bird world worthy of protection with rare, partly endangered bird species, as well as a near-natural alluvial forest with tree species composition appropriate to the location."

The NSG is surrounded by a 96.1 hectare landscape protection area , which also bears the name Johanniterwald and serves as an additional area. At the same time there is the " Johanniterwald " bird sanctuary (No. 7712-403), which is congruent with the NSG. It is also part of the 4,929 hectare FFH area " Taubergießen, Elz and Ettenbach ".
