The Ehrleshalden quarry is a nature reserve in the natural area of the Lahr - Emmendinger- Vorberge in Baden-Württemberg . It is a secondary biotope with high biological diversity ; a habitat for endangered animal and plant species and a valuable geological outcrop .
geography
The nature reserve is located on the edge of the foothills in the area of the municipality of Herbolzheim in the district of Emmendingen in Baden-Württemberg. It is located between Ringsheim in the north and Herbolzheim in the south and borders on federal highway 3 in the west .
Characteristics
The area was designated as a nature reserve by ordinance on December 17, 1990 and is listed under the protected area number 3.175 at the Freiburg Regional Council. It has an area of 6.5 hectares and is classified in IUCN Category IV, a biotope and species protection area. The WDPA ID is 165689 and corresponds to the European CDDA code and the EUNIS no.
The main protection purpose “is the preservation of the quarry area as

- Area of high biological diversity with endangered communities,
- Habitat of several animal and plant species that are endangered in their population. "
history
In the quarry, lime was extracted from the brown Jura until the 1970s and burned in a local lime works . The limestone used to be the source of the Benedictines in Ettenheimmünster .
geology
In this thickness and size, the quarry is a seldom occurring main roe rock formation and in Germany is limited to the area of the Upper Rhine . It is considered a geological window into the history of the earth. Relay fractures can still be seen on the lower level of the fracture clod landscape. The up to 30 meters high and partly weathered rock walls have numerous crevices, niches and holes. There are also steep walls made of loess , rubble heaps made of boulders and slopes made of loess clay from which spring water escapes. A thick layer of loess can be seen above the wall of the quarry.
Flora and fauna

Above the edge of the quarry, in the semi-arid grassland area, there are various plant species , such as B. the mountain hair strand , the Dost and the common sorrel . From the orchid family, the orchid orchid , swallowwort , scabiosa knapweed and willow-leaved elephant grow here .

From the family of snakes have smooth snake and from the family of real lizards , the sand lizard habitat in the sunny scree slopes and embankments. The steep walls offer nesting sites for peregrine falcons . Numerous holes in the steep, sunny loess walls are densely populated by insects such as wild bees and wasps . Birds find their habitat in the bushes and forests that have formed on the terraces .
