history

Landolin legend

Legend has it that hunting dogs became tame and unable to hunt in the area where the Irish missionary Landelin settled as a hermit. Because it was believed to be magic, Landelin is said to have been slain by a hunter. Five springs emerged from the blood-soaked soil, the water of which was soon considered to be miraculous.

Already shortly after Landelin's martyrdom, the veneration of the saint is said to have begun and a pilgrimage developed.

monastery

Bishop Eddo of Strasbourg built the Ettenheimmünster monastery here. The later important abbey experienced its heyday in the baroque era, was abolished in 1803 during the secularization and finally destroyed in 1865.

Incorporation

On December 1, 1971, Ettenheimmünster was incorporated into Ettenheim.

regional customs

On February 22nd ( Petri Stuhlfeier ) the “Grotto and Snake Day” is celebrated in Ettenheimmünster. On this day the children go from house to house and shout "Fliäh, fliäh, Grodde un Schlange, dr holy Sangt Peter can with dr fierige Schtange", for which they receive sweets.

On the Sunday after Landelin Day, September 22, a rider procession will be held in the pilgrimage church following a festive service , during which a silver-chased Landelin bust from 1506, which was kept in the church, was carried. At the center of the pilgrimage are the healing springs at the church, from which many take water home, which is said to be especially helpful for eye problems.
