Ildefons Haas OSB (born April 23, 1735 in Offenburg , † May 30, 1791 in Ettenheimmünster ) was a German Benedictine monk , church musician and composer .

He worked in the Ettenheim Munster Abbey .

Life

Ildefons Haas was born in Offenburg in 1735. He already received musical training in childhood and adolescence. He played the violin and emerged as a singer. He attended the grammar school of the Franciscan monastery in his native city. In 1750 he entered the Benedictine monastery Ettenheimmünster. This was a respected place of baroque religious art (painting, music, architecture, literature). From 1769 an organ by Johann Andreas Silbermann was available. Johann Stamitz was one of his teachers at that time . He was in correspondence with Isfrid Kayser , JG Portmann and Abbé Vogler . Thanks to these contacts and his increasingly perfect violin playing, he was soon considered the best violinist and church composer in southern Germany.

In 1759 Ildefons Haas was ordained a priest.

In addition to his work as a composer, Haas also worked as a librarian and translated a number of theological works into German.

Musical creation

Haas has left an extensive body of work in almost all genres of church vocal music. His works were highly regarded by his contemporaries, but were later forgotten. More recently, his former place of work, Ettenheimmünster, has made a name for itself in looking after his heritage. Musically, Haas's work can be assigned to the climax and end of baroque music.

The offertory Exsultate, jubilate appeared on the CD Festive Music from Southwest German Benedictine Monasteries on the Ars Musici label. Further offerings were recorded in live recordings on CD at choir concerts in the church in Ettenheimmünster. The two CDs with southern German organ music from the 18th century, played by Bernhard Klär on the Silbermann organ in Ettenheimmünster, contain some works ( transcriptions ) by P. Ildefons Haas and are available from the sacristan of the church in Ettenheimmünster.
