Gisenburg

The Gisenburg , formerly also called Gysenburg , is an abandoned hill fort at 349  m above sea level. NN in the monastery forest on the south side of the Münstertal near the district Ettenheimmünster of the city of Ettenheim in the Ortenaukreis in Baden-Württemberg .

The Gisenburg, like the Heidenkeller Castle , is probably the remains of a pre-Christian Celtic refugee castle and indicates the early settlement of the Münstertal. The main area covered an area of around 190 by 40 meters.

The Gisenburg is mentioned for the first time in the annals of the Ettenheimmünster monastery , where a man named "Gisiko", presumably an Alemannic nobleman, is described who is said to have killed the Irish monk Landolin († around 640).

Presumably the stones of the castle, whose current castle stable only shows traces of terrain like two ramparts each with a ditch in the south and a terrace surrounding the mountain spur in the north, were used for the construction of the monastery.
