Sasbach
The largest and most closed occurrences of the downy oak forest (bush and high forest) in the Kaiserstuhl area, relic of a forest that was formerly widespread on the steep slopes facing south and almost completely destroyed by viticulture. Less exposed slopes carry the sedge-linden forest, which is a very characteristic forest community for the southern Upper Rhine area, the locations of which have largely been converted into fields, orchards and vineyards. As a relic from the post-glacial warm period, the sedge-linden forest could only survive in those locations where the common beech could not penetrate it during its post-glacial immigration for climatic and edaphic reasons. At the edges of the forest, a colorful and species-rich fringing society comes to training. The dry grass in the few open places are distinguished by floristic rarities.
