In the district of Karlsruhe there are 42 nature reserves. The Karlsruhe Regional Council is responsible for the designation of nature reserves . According to the protected area statistics of the State Institute for the Environment, Measurements and Nature Conservation Baden-Württemberg (LUBW), 3,217.32 hectares of the district area are under nature protection, that is 2.97 percent.
