The nature reserve (NSG) Kohlplattenschlag covers an area of 49.3 hectares and is located in the so-called Hardtwald in the Upper Rhine Plain . The area is located between the village of Graben in the municipality of Graben-Neudorf and the village of Neuthard in the municipality of Karlsdorf-Neuthard in the district of Karlsruhe in Baden-Württemberg . The city of Bruchsal is about six kilometers as the crow flies in an easterly direction.

Nature is completely left to its own devices (with the exception of occasional clearings against forestation of the bank zones) is strictly protected and completely fenced, but can be visited on guided excursions by local groups from NABU or BUND . The lake with a diameter of around 600 meters, located in the nature reserve, can also be crossed in small groups in a reed boat to gently observe the fauna. In contrast to many other quarry ponds, it is forbidden to swim, sail or fish. A circular path with three observation platforms leads around the area. In addition, as part of the Hardtwald bird sanctuary north of Karlsruhe , the NSG Kohlplattenschlag is under special protection as a designated FFH ( Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive ) area for the creation of a European biotope network system, Natura 2000 .

After the gravel mining was completed, the area was completely restructured in 1994 into a refuge for numerous animal and plant species. In the western edge area, trees were planted in order to integrate the gravel pit into the existing forest. The goat milker (Caprimulgus europaeus), which is threatened with extinction in Baden-Württemberg, has one of its few habitats there. It depends on the dry forest areas interspersed with bare areas and hunts for large insects at dusk.

The NSG Kohlplattenschlag offers a breeding and resting place as well as a rich food supply , especially for water birds , wading birds and migratory birds . Here sand martins , kingfisher , middle woodpecker , little ringed plover , marsh harrier , red-backed killer and many more frolic and breed . In addition, numerous frogs have now settled, including the now rare tree frog, which is under strict species protection, as well as fire salamanders and lizards ; a fox family has also set up its den .

In the forests there, charcoal makers used to set up charcoal pits and charcoal piles to produce charcoal , hence the name Kohlplattenschlag .
