The nature reserve Albtal and Seitentäler is located in the northern Black Forest in the floodplains of the river Alb and its tributaries. Its 620.6 ha area belongs to ten communities in four Baden-Württemberg districts. The area with the identification number 2.178 has been under nature protection since June 1, 1994.

The following cities and municipalities have a share in the nature reserve: Ettlingen , Karlsbad , Malsch , Marxzell , Waldbronn (all districts of Karlsruhe ), Gaggenau , Loffenau (both districts of Rastatt ), Dobel , Bad Herrenalb (both districts of Calw ), Straubenhardt ( Enz district ).

The areas are located in the following natural areas of the Black Forest : Black Forest edge plates , Grindenschwarzwald and Enzhöhen and Northern Black Forest .

Protection purpose

The protection purpose of the nature reserve is

  • the preservation of the floodplains as open landscape areas,
  • the preservation and development of diverse biotopes such as flowing and still waters, springs, semi-natural deciduous and coniferous forests, gallery forests, hedges, stone bars, dry stone walls, rocks, log heaps, wet and humid meadows, sedges and reeds as well as blades and brackets,
  • the preservation of the diversity of animal species such as birds, amphibians and reptiles, wild bees, grasshoppers and butterflies as well as the protection of various plant communities such as bristle and pipe grass, moist golden oat and grape bean meadows in their typical near-natural to natural manifestations,
  • the maintenance of the water dynamics, the water systems including the historical water meadow systems and the water quality and
  • the preservation of geomorphological conditions such as rocks, rock seas, blades and gorges.
