The monster gorge is a nature reserve in the border region of natural areas Northern Upper Rhine lowland and gäu plateaus in Baden-Wuerttemberg .
geography
The nature reserve lies on the territory of the municipalities of Bruchsal , Untergrombach and Weingarten (Baden) . It encompasses the Talklinge of the Ungeheuerklamm (between the community forest District II Bergwald on the Bruchsal-Untergrombach district and the community forest District II Katzenberg on the Weingarten district) with the hillside forests adjacent to the gorge. The protected area also includes the orchard and meadow belt on the western slope of the mountain forest in the soot and weir ditches, bounded to the west by federal highway 3 and some properties in the Galgenberg district, Weingarten community.
Characteristics
The area was designated as a nature reserve by ordinance on April 2, 1996 by the Karlsruhe Regional Council and has an area of almost 50 hectares. It is listed under the protected area number 2.199 and is classified in IUCN Category IV, a biotope and species protection area. The CDDA code is 165988 and also corresponds to the WDPA ID .
The main protection purpose is the preservation, care and development of the Ungeheuerklamm and the adjacent areas as important habitats for rare, sometimes specialized and endangered animal and plant species in their communities.
history
The Ungeheuerklamm is the largest of a series of ravine-like blades (gorges) that have formed in the area between Bruchsal and Karlsruhe-Durlach. In addition to the ravine-like valley ridge with its submontane vegetation - including the ravine forest - which is characterized by damp and cool conditions, the protected position also includes adjacent orchards and extensively cultivated meadows with small, mosaic-like structures.
geology
The bedrock in this area is the Upper Muschelkalk, which is covered by layers of loess or clay of varying thickness.
Flora and fauna
In the warm, dry hillside forests and the cool, damp Talklinge with their characteristic forest communities and their numerous regional and supraregional botanical peculiarities such as the blue-red stone seeds , deer tongue , the forest cornice and the lobed shield fern , also known as thorny shield fern, there are also some types of orchid such as the nest root , the white Waldvögelein , broad-leaved stendellus , helmet orchid , purple orchid and goat's tongue . A floristic feature of cool, shady deciduous forests in the west-central Kraichgau was also the long-leaved forest bird , which for several decades was only known from the Ungeheuerklamm. It was only regularly found again in the Durlach area.
The true meaning of the Ungeheuerklamm lies in its moss and lichen flora. It is the location of about 30-40 submontane moss species, which are regionally found almost exclusively in this area.
In birds, for example, pied flycatcher , graycatcher and hoopoe have been detected in the area, the latter of which is on the red list in Germany .
