The Allmend fields are a nature reserve in the natural area Northern Upper Rhine lowland in Baden-Wuerttemberg .

geography

The nature reserve is located in the municipality of Rheinstetten . Together with the previously protected nature reserve Sandgrube in Dreispitz-Mörsch on both sides of the Rastatt-Karlsruhe railway line, it comprises the area of the former dry dredging on the Epplesee , a small part of the bank itself including the moist transition areas and sections of the Forchheim Hardtwald to the east .

history

The entire area south of the Epplesees of the former dry dredging, which was discontinued in the 1980s, was placed under protection. Because dredging was not approved, the areas have remained unused since then. The rich biotope spectrum of the sand pit and the adjacent shores of the lake, which has emerged over the decades, is an ideal secondary, artificially created alternative biotope for many of the animal and plant species that were adapted to the former drifting sand and inland dunes as well as to the formerly meandering Rhine .

geology

This pit is located in the middle of the former drift sand and dune areas between the Rhine and the Kinzig-Murg-Rinne, which are used for agriculture today. The lime-free, gravelly sands deposited on the lower terrace of the Rhine are of interest to the construction industry. Originally the raw soil exposed by the dredging was only slightly covered with topsoil, but later this was added in parts.

description

The area was designated as a nature reserve by ordinance on November 26, 1996 by the Karlsruhe Regional Council and covers an area of 40 hectares. It is listed under the protected area number 2.203 and is classified in IUCN Category IV as a biotope and species protection area. The CDDA code is 162064 and also corresponds to the WDPA ID .

The main protection purpose is to secure the sand pits as pioneer sites from moist to extremely dry areas, to secure and promote the successional stages of the vegetation on the various sites as well as to secure and promote the structural diversity of the sand pits, their steep slopes and elevations as a habitat for them flora and fauna adapted to extreme locations.

Flora and fauna

One reason for the biodiversity in this pit is the different ages of the fallow land. Lean lawns, gorse bushes and moisture-loving formations join the pre-forest stages and sandy lawns.

One of the special features was the breeding occurrence of the stonechat , which is very sensitive to any disturbance in its biotope. The typical plants of the barren, lime-free sandy soils in the area include, for example, the mountain sand bells and the hill forget-me-nots .
