The August-Hinrichs-Bühne (AHB) is a Low German amateur stage that is part of the “Low German Drama” section of the Oldenburg State Theater and only shows plays in Low German . Your venue is the "Small House" of the State Theater.

history

The August Hinrichs stage emerged from the Späälkoppel of the Ollnborger Kring founded on March 21, 1921. In 1923 it was connected to the former Oldenburg State Theater. In 1939 the "Niederdeutsche Bühne Oldenburg am Landestheater" was renamed "August Hinrichs Bühne am Oldenburgische Staatstheater" - a reminiscence of the writer August Hinrichs .

"Cilly Chors" play by Gorch Fock , production by the Niederdeutsche Bühne Oldenburg in 1930 with Emil Hinrichs and Agnes Diers

The August Hinrichs stage continued to play during the war years. She was also on tour as part of KDF ( Strength Through Joy ) in 1940, 1941 and 1943 to support the troops . She played on the Western Front , in Holland and Denmark, as well as in Bulgaria, Romania and on the Black Sea Front . Until April 18, 1944, with the piece "Sware Tied" by August Hinrichs, the stage was able to keep playing.

Emil Hinrichs died in 1944 . He was the founder, actor and promoter of the stage. His son Carl Hinrichs was his successor. The old tribe of players slowly settled in again. Some, like Adolf Weddi , had to lose their lives in the war, but many new, young players were added, so that the quality of the acting reached a high level again and the palace hall of the Oldenburg Palace , as a new venue, was mostly sold out. Carl Hinrichs has headed the AHB for a good 20 years. The style remained largely unchanged, but modern stage technology was increasingly used. Guest performances took place all over West Germany and AHB actors worked in films.

Carl Hinrichs died on December 7, 1967. Heinz Schnittker , who had been with the stage since 1939, took over the stage management at the request of the theater group. He continued to rely on tried and tested plays. After the death of Heinz Schnittker, Günter Kühn was elected the new stage manager on August 8, 1975. He began, initially very cautiously, to initiate a change in the AHB to a more modern theater stage with contemporary themes and problems. When Günter Kühn stepped down as stage manager in 1995 and Herwig Dust took over the management, he had already pushed the transformation of the Niederdeutsche Bühne Oldenburg from a light entertainment theater to a serious and modern drama. In September 1995, Herwig Dust was elected as the new stage manager with a large majority and strong support from the members of the August-Hinrichs-Bühne.

With classical pieces, which were mostly well translated and staged, he formed a Low German stage that was contemporary and could well compete with professional theater. For example, the following classics have been translated and played well into Low German: Dürrenmatt , “ The visit of the old lady ”; Tennessee WilliamsGlasmenagerie ” or Horvath's socially critical play “ Stories from the Vienna Woods ” (… van de Küst) with an extraordinary stage design in which the audience had their place on a turntable and were rotated to the different venues. Above all, however, in 1999 " Rose Bernd " by Gerhart Hauptmann , with Alexandra Peters , directed by Hans-Peter Renz and in 2007 Gesche Gottfried by Rainer Werner Fassbinder , directed by Michael Uhl and with Manuela Simon in the role of Gesche Gottfried , be mentioned. The AHB received the Willy Beutz Acting Prize for each of these performances .

On October 17, 1998, the AHB moved with the premiere of “Foftein” from the palace hall to the state theater, to the new, smaller theater extension “Das kleine Haus”. For the audience, this was a critically viewed change, but it was ultimately well received. After Heinrich Kunst's death , his farmhouse in Ofenerfeld ( Wiefelstede ) was converted into a meeting place. The AHB set up a studio stage here.

In order to ensure the continued existence of the August Hinrichs stage, Herwig Dust began intensively promoting young talent. He set up "Platt´n´Studios" where children, young people and adults can try things out under the guidance of experienced directors and theater teachers. These "junior studios" are looked after by language mentors from the August-Hinrichs-Bühne to enable them to learn the Low German language. The young actors of the respective courses conclude their program with a public presentation. A takeover in the ensemble of the AHB is then possible.

Under Markus A. Müller , General Director of the Oldenburg State Theater from 2006 to 2014, the AHB was even more closely involved in the state theater's operations.

The division "Low German Drama at the Oldenburg State Theater" was created, the heart of which is the AHB and its members. The position of a dramaturge ( Janine Claaßen , Cornelia Ehlers , Gesche Gloystein , Sarit Streicher ) and a senior director (Michael Uhl) was established for this division .

When Markus A. Müller moved from Oldenburg to the Mainz State Theater after eight years , Christian Firmbach took over the artistic direction in Oldenburg in 2014 and thus also the artistic direction of the AHB. Christian Firmbach will also continue the model of the "Low German Drama" division with the AHB.

On August 22, 2016, Petra Bohlen was elected by the members as the new stage manager. She succeeded Herwig Dust, who is no longer standing for re-election after leading the stage for 21 years. He remains in the ensemble and a member of the AHB.

In order to attract nationwide attention, the recordings were recorded and broadcast in standard German until 1967. From 1978 onwards, the NDR was broadcast in Low German.
