Markus Alexander Müller (born April 17, 1973 in Kempten (Allgäu) ) is the artistic director of the Mainz State Theater .

Life

Markus Müller studied business administration, theater studies, German and philosophy in Bamberg, Erlangen and Mannheim. During his studies he worked at the Bamberg ETA Hoffmann Theater as an assistant director , employee in public relations and from 1995 as an actor and director.

From 1997 to 2001 Müller was personal assistant to General Manager Ulrich Schwab at the Nationaltheater Mannheim and from 2001 to 2005 Deputy General Manager. He also worked as the artistic director of various festivals and theater projects.

From August 2006 to July 2014 he was general director of the Oldenburg State Theater . Here he established the Junge Staatstheater (JUST) as a separate division of the house. He initiated the festival “Go West” (theaters from Flanders and the Netherlands) and the international “ Performing Arts Festival PAZZ ”. In 2007, the "Exerzierhalle" venue opened under his leadership on the horse market with two variable stages. He was able to finance this project exclusively through third-party funds and sponsorship money. Under Müller the new section "Low German Drama" with the ensemble of the August Hinrichs stage was established .

"At the moment there is a great tendency in social life to persist, everything is stuck," said Müller in a conversation that he had a few weeks after taking office in Oldenburg for the magazine Oper & Tanz and that reflects his artistic idea. “At the same time, people long for something different, but nobody dares to really design and express these utopias anymore . The theater is still the place where one should encourage this longing . "

In the 2010/11 season, under Müller's direction, the Great House in Oldenburg was renovated and restored, and the rehearsal center was completely rebuilt and expanded. This was financed from the Federal Economic Stimulus Package II . During the construction work, a large part of the gaming operations were relocated to Hall 10, a former aircraft yard on the disused Oldenburg air base . There were exciting productions in the new environment.

Since the 2014/15 season he has been the artistic director and managing director of the Mainz State Theater. On November 21, 2015, 120 employees of the house sang Ode to Joy while the right-wing populist party Alternative for Germany held a rally in front of the State Theater on Gutenbergplatz under the motto “Against the asylum chaos”. Müller had invited all of the company's employees to attend. The Mainz police and the AfD then filed criminal charges against the Mainz State Theater in persona Markus A. Müller for “grossly disrupting an approved assembly”. “If you get an ad for it, then that's the way it is,” he said afterwards. The Mainz public prosecutor closed the investigation.
