history

The foundation stone for the Allgemeine Zeitung was laid in 1850 with the daily street gazette. It remained an advertising paper for three years, until in 1854 an editorial concept slowly developed with a political, economic, columnist and local section. The original name was also renamed "Mainzer Anzeiger". After the end of the First World War in 1918, the Anzeiger gained in importance and established itself as a daily newspaper in occupied Germany. In addition, it developed into the most widely read newspaper in the People's State of Hesse , lower Maingau and Rheingau . When large parts of Mainz city center were destroyed by bombing raids on February 27, 1945 , little was left of the publishing house on the Große Bleiche . The Mainzer Anzeiger appeared for the last time on March 19, 1945. At times it previously served as a party organ of the NSDAP and had little in common with the traditional newspaper founded in 1850. With a lot of zest for action and motivation, former employees of the publishing house founded the Neue Mainzer Anzeiger u. a. could Erich Dombrowski won as editor for the reestablishment of the daily newspaper. In May 1947 the newspaper title was changed again to Allgemeine Zeitung , which has remained until today. In the same year a cooperation with the Wormser Zeitung was concluded. Some editors are co-founders of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, which first appeared in 1949 .
