The upper Bruchwiesen are a nature reserve in the natural area Northern Upper Rhine valley in Baden-Wuerttemberg .
geography
The nature reserve is located in the municipality of Graben-Neudorf to the west between Graben-Neudorf and the municipality of Dettenheim .
history
The vast majority of the Oberbruchwiesen belongs to the largest moor in the Upper Rhine Plain in Baden, which occupies the south and east of the Graben Bay. The mineral cover layers of the moor were brought in through many years of meadow irrigation . The top layers consist of clay, but show their origin in the loess area of the Kraichgau . The water for the irrigation of the meadows was taken from the Heglach or the Alte Bach and passed through the Galgengraben (also known as the Alte Bach) into the Oberbruchwiesen. At the Neugraben, the central irrigation ditch of the area, traps for the meadow irrigation have been preserved.
As a coherent meadow landscape, the Oberbruchwiesen represent an impressive example of a cultural landscape. They represent a land use that used to be the only possible economic form of the Rheinaue in such locations, depending on the soil and water regime. Meadows are always a culturally-related vegetation formation in a potential forest area. Due to the high groundwater level, meadow use represents the primary land use. In particular in the former floodplain area of the Rhine and its extensive hydrological influence before the correction, meadows were the main use of the Rhine meadows.
Today the Oberbruchwiesen with their approx. 125 hectares belong to the last large meadow areas of the northern Upper Rhine plain.
This meadow landscape only incorporates the culture-related facilities such as earth and grass paths, ditch systems or individual trees, as well as a minimum of infrastructural necessities.
description
The area was designated as a nature reserve by ordinance on March 30, 1990 by the Karlsruhe Regional Council and has an area of 125 hectares. It is listed under the protected area number 2.127 and is classified in IUCN Category IV as a biotope and species protection area. The CDDA code is 164860 and also corresponds to the WDPA ID .
The main protection purpose is the preservation of one of the last contiguous large, partly moist meadow areas in the Rheinaue with its characteristic animal and plant communities. The importance of the Oberbruchwiesen as a breeding, feeding and wintering area for endangered bird species as well as the ditch system as a habitat for rare dragonfly species should be emphasized.
Flora and fauna
For numerous dragonfly species, the Oberbruchwiesen, with their system of ditches with a high level of water purity and specific flow speed, are a special refuge. The helmet azure maiden , for example, has its only occurrence in the area in northern Baden. In addition to the occurrence of threatened dragonflies, amphibians and butterfly species, the Oberbruchwiesen are of great importance as breeding, feeding, resting and wintering habitats for the bird world. Among them, the meadow-dwelling species are particularly endangered by the decline in meadows. The Oberbruchwiesen is one of the last three breeding grounds for the curlew in northern Baden. The area is an important resting and wintering place for marsh harriers , lapwing and gray shrike. For the hen harrier , the Oberbruchwiesen represent one of a total of 8 regularly occupied wintering areas in Baden-Württemberg.
