The Wagbachniederung is a nature reserve in the natural area Northern Upper Rhine valley and Hardt levels in Baden-Wuerttemberg . The diversely structured wetland in the lowlands of the Rheinaue is characterized by the clarification ponds of the Waghäuseler sugar factory, which was operated until 1995, and the resulting large reed beds and extensive mud areas and remnants of the formerly most important moor in the Rheinaue. It is an important breeding and resting place for native and migrating endangered bird species throughout Europe and is one of the most important EU bird sanctuaries in Germany.
geography
The approximately 224 hectares large area is located in the loop of a Altarms the Rhine north of Waghausel and south of Neulußheim in the districts of Oberhausen-Rheinhausen ( district of Karlsruhe ) and Neulußheim ( Rhein-Neckar ) Baden-Wuerttemberg.
Characteristics
The area was designated as a nature reserve by ordinance on July 8, 1983 and is managed under the protected area number 2.064 at the Karlsruhe Regional Council. It has an area of 223.5 hectares, of which 199.8 hectares fall in the Karlsruhe district and 20.6 hectares in the Rhein-Neckar district. The nature reserve is classified in IUCN Category IV, a biotope and species protection area. The WDPA ID is 82851 and corresponds to the European CDDA code and the EUNIS no.
The main protection purpose “is the preservation of the diversely structured wetland in the lowlands of the Rheinaue for ecological and scientific reasons. The high level of protection is due in particular to
- the international significance of the area as a breeding ground for several endangered bird species,
- the internationally and intercontinentally important functions of the area as a resting and feeding place for northern Eurasian migratory birds,
- the large, diverse reed stands, which are unique in terms of their area in northern Baden-Württemberg,
- the particularly large biodiversity of biotopes, which, in addition to the extensive muddy areas that are otherwise rarely found, contain the remains of ecologically particularly important fen areas of the formerly most famous moor in the Rheinaue. "

In the protected area of birds can be observed as Kormoran , ducks , Canada goose , swan , coot , Haubentaucher , Graureiher , silver Heron , Purpurreiher , gulls (especially black-headed gulls ); Warbler , warblers , bearded tit , backed Shrike , Cuckoo and Kingfisher . The area is easily accessible. The area is easily visible from the old federal road 36, which lies above the Wagbach lowland and is now a car-free cycle path between Neulußheim and Waghäusel. In the spring of 2009, two freely accessible observation huts were built near the road, which also allow photography with a (monopod) tripod.
