The Oftersheimer dunes are a landscape and nature reserve in the area of the community of Oftersheim ( Rhein-Neckar-Kreis ) in northern Baden-Württemberg . It is located southeast of Oftersheim in the direction of Sandhausen in the Schwetzinger Hardt ( Hardt Plains natural area ).
The Oftersheim dunes are the highest inland dunes in Baden-Württemberg, formed from ice-age sand and gravel deposits from the Rhine.
Origin and history
The Oftersheim dunes are part of a larger chain of inland dunes and drifting sand fields in the northern Upper Rhine Plain, which were formed at the end of the Ice Age. At this time the Rhine withdrew from parts of its river bed, so that winds could carry the sand from the now exposed Rhine lowlands. The inland dunes are the result of these sand drifts from the Rhine lowlands. These inland dunes were gradually overgrown by forest. The use of pastures and agriculture also resulted in open sandy areas on the inland dunes.
description
The total of 48 hectares of nature reserve Oftersheimer Dünen is made up of four separate nature reserve areas. These partial areas are embedded together in the landscape protection area of the same name Oftersheimer Dünen, which is 173 hectares in size. The sub-areas are the following areas:
- Partial area Friedenshöhe (2 ha): The Friedenshöhe borders the B 291 near Oftersheim. Here you can still find open dune areas with lime sand lawn.
- Dreieichenbuckel subarea (6 ha): The Dreieichenbuckel is a narrow strip that borders the sports facilities of the community of Oftersheim and the Hardtwaldsiedlung in the west. The strip is forested with pines and deciduous trees.
- Subarea Feldherrenhügel (37 ha): The Feldherrenhügel is a hill about 20 m high compared to the surrounding area with a flat summit plateau. Here is the highest point of the dunes. The summit plateau of the hill is overgrown with sparse, high stands of Scots pine; In the undergrowth you can find significant deposits of sand grass. The flanks of the dunes, on the other hand, are densely overgrown with wood.
