Kallenberg and Kaiserberg is a nature reserve in the area of the Baden-Württemberg communities of Eschelbronn and Neidenstein.

Characteristics

The nature reserve was designated by decree of the Karlsruhe Regional Council of September 6, 1989 and has a size of 39.6 hectares. It is listed under the protected area number 2.120. The CDDA code for the nature reserve is 164006 and corresponds to the WDPA ID .

Location and description

91 percent of the protected area is on the Eschelbronn marker and includes the Kallenberg quarry . It is located north between Eschelbronn and Neidenstein, each directly adjacent to the localities. The quarry, which was built on Kallenberg around 1900, was closed in 1977. In the area, in addition to the former quarry, there are orchards, grassland zones and fields. On the nutrient-poor and dry slopes of the Kallenberg, species of the rough meadows grow such as the golden thistle (Carlina vulgaris), the upright trespe (Bromus erectus) and the pinnate twinkle (Brachypodium pinnatum). Remnants of old fruit trees loosen up the meadows.

The area lies in the natural area 125- Kraichgau within the natural spatial main unit 12- Gäuplatten in the Neckar and Tauberland and is part of the FFH area No. 6718-311 Nördlicher Kraichgau .

There is a high biodiversity in the nature reserve due to the many different biotopes .

Protection purpose

According to the Protected Areas Ordinance, the main protection purpose is conservation and promotion

  • a typical landscape section that is unique today in terms of biotope diversity and species composition,
  • of extensively used agricultural land, in particular a potential occurrence of arable weeds,
  • of near-natural biotope types, especially the reed areas in the Schwarzbachaue,
  • of secondary biotopes in which an undisturbed succession should continue,
  • a geologically significant rock outcrop for research and teaching,
  • the animal and plant communities occurring in the area and their habitats.

hike

Starting from the Kallenberg hiking car park, the approximately four-kilometer-long Hetzenloch-Weg leads through the nature reserve as a circular hiking trail.
