The Leimen quarry nature reserve is located in the area of ​​the town of Leimen in the Rhein-Neckar district and the independent city of Heidelberg in Baden-Württemberg .

Characteristics

The protected area was created on October 10, 1995 by ordinance of the Karlsruhe Regional Council with the protected area number 2191. This ordinance was published in the Law Gazette for Baden-Württemberg on October 20, 1995 and came into force thereafter. The CDDA code is 165700 and corresponds to the WDPA ID .

location

The area is about 600 meters northeast of downtown Leimen in the direction of the Heidelberg district of Emmertsgrund . It borders to the west and east on the landscape protection area No. 2.26.048 Bergstrasse-Süd and in the north on the LSG 2.21.001 Bergstrasse-Mitte . It belongs entirely to FFH area No. 6518-311 Steinachtal and Kleiner Odenwald . The EU bird sanctuary quarry Leimen is congruent with the nature reserve. It is also part of the Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park . The Leimen quarry is located in the natural area 226- Bergstrasse within the natural spatial main unit 22- Northern Upper Rhine Lowland .

Protection purpose

According to the Protected Area Ordinance, the main protection purpose is conservation and promotion

  • a shell limestone quarry with a tunnel system as a habitat for various bat species, which occur in large numbers and for which the protected area is not only used as summer and winter quarters, but also as a basis for exchange with other habitats, e.g. B. serves the Heidelberg Castle;
  • temporarily to permanently water-bearing bodies of water as an aquatic habitat, especially for rare amphibian species threatened with extinction such as the green toad and the yellow-bellied toad as well as a location for rare and threatened plant species;
  • a unique mosaic of different, complementary and interlinked habitats on a small area, in particular rock walls, dry and poor grassland, fringes and bushes, for numerous endangered animal and plant species.
