Zugmantel-Bandholz is a nature reserve of around 17 hectares in the area of the municipality of Sandhausen ( Rhein-Neckar district ) in northern Baden-Württemberg . It is located southeast of Sandhausen in the “Bandholz” community forest on the eastern edge of the Schwetzinger Hardt in the Hardtebenen natural area .
This nature reserve is a former sand pit that was placed under protection after rare plants and animals were settled. It is characterized by a mixture of water areas, wooded areas and open sandy lawn with drought-loving plants. This is also where part of the dune range is located, which stretches from Oftersheim via Sandhausen to Walldorf .
Origin and history
The sand dune wall between Walldorf and Sandhausen is part of the inland dunes , a special feature of the northern Upper Rhine Plain. The dunes were formed around 11,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age as sand deposits from the Rhine. The dunes south of Sandhausen were released for sand mining in the 1970s; it was not until 1980 that mining stopped. The Zugmantel-Bandholz area essentially comprises the site of the former sand pit. After the sand mining was finished, the sand pit was partially filled with rubble, road substructure material and sewage sludge and partially reforested. The rise in the groundwater created a shallow water zone with numerous islands in the pit. In addition to the water surface, the steep walls of the sand pit provided valuable habitat for plants and animals. The rapid colonization of the sand pit with plants and animals and the rise in the water table created a valuable habitat, so no further backfilling of the sand pit was required. In 1985 the sand pit and its water bodies were placed under nature protection. Due to fluctuations in the ground and surface water levels from the end of the 1980s, however, the nature reserve has changed significantly. Some of the water bodies have disappeared again and overgrown by trees and bushes. Only through regular nature conservation interventions can the original water surface be kept free of wood.
Characteristics
The area was designated as a nature reserve by ordinance on December 19, 1995 and is listed under the protected area number 2.088 at the Karlsruhe Regional Council. It has an area of around 17 hectares and is classified in IUCN Category IV, a biotope and species protection area. The WDPA ID is 166429 and corresponds to the European CDDA code and the EUNIS no.
The protective purpose "is the maintenance of a sand pit which, as a secondary biotope, offers opportunities to live in particular for those animals and plants, some of which are endangered in their existence, which colonize the open, sometimes steeply sloping sandy areas and are dependent on shallow temporary waters."
Flora
Pioneering plants have settled on the soil of the filled-in areas , as are typical on ruderal areas , such as B. Evening primrose , adder head , chicory or sweet clover . Originally, moisture-loving plants such as cattails or reeds were found in the shallow water zones and in the bank area . In the meantime, trees such as pine, robinia or linden as well as blackberries have conquered the bottom of the sand pit. Pine, maple and hornbeam grow in the reforested area . It is hoped through nature conservation measures that the rare Cyprus grass will also settle again.
Wildlife
Since the "Zugmantel-Bandholz" nature reserve includes both dry and wet biotopes, both moisture-loving animals and animals that are adapted to drought have settled there. Aquatic insects, amphibians and birds have settled on the water surfaces and in the bushes. During the largest expansion of the water surface in 1982, this included z. B. the following types:
- Dragonflies like the southern damsel , the great royal dragonfly or the blood-red darter
- Swimming beetles like the yellow fire beetle
- Amphibians such as the crested newt , green toad, tree frog or common toad
- Birds like the coot or the marsh warbler
The occurrence of sun-loving amphibians such as B. the tree frog or the green toad, however, depends on the fact that the water bodies remain little-shaded waters due to human intervention. The steep slopes of the pit are ideal habitats for insects such as arachnids , digger wasps or wild bees as well as birds such as the sand martin . The living conditions on the open sand areas are very similar to those in the open sand areas of the Sandhausen dunes. B. the blue-winged wasteland insect , sand wasp or sand dune beetle finds.
