The European Nature Information System ( EUNIS ; German European Nature Information System ) is a database of the European Topic Center on Biological Diversity of the European Environment Agency and the European Environmental Information Observation Network for environmental reporting and to support protected area systems in the Natura 2000 . It contains information about living things and their habitats .

Functions

In addition to a text search with categorical restrictions, there is the option of using a flash-based GIS tool in the web browser to display selected data on a map. A glossary provides an explanation of the technical terms used . Registered users can save search criteria, view non-validated data and download the database as a Microsoft Access file.

scope

In 2007 the database consisted of 275,000 taxa occurring in Europe . The amount of information per species depends on the potential use of this information for the European Environment Agency. A source is given for each data record; area information exists for birds, which includes population sizes and development trends. For other classes such as mammals, amphibians and reptiles there is only an overview of the geographical distribution. The protection status from the Red Lists of the federal states was integrated alongside literature information.

It also opens up the Common Database on Designated Areas  (CDDA), which contains all protected areas of EU members and associates.
