The steppe spurge ( Euphorbia seguieriana ) is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae). It is common in Eurasia .

Vegetative characteristics

The steppe milkweed is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches a height of 15 to 40 centimeters. The vegetative parts of the plant are colored blue-green.

The leaves are leathery and appear succulent . The middle leaves are 10 to 20 millimeters long and 2 to 4 millimeters wide and are linear-lanceolate and end in a spiked tip.

Generative characteristics

The inflorescences consist of more than eight rays, which in turn are forked dichotomously once or twice (rarely up to five times).

The capsule fruits are 2 to 3 millimeters long, finely dotted and glabrous.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16 or 18.

Occurrence

The steppe milkweed is common in Eurasia .

It grows on dry continental grass . In Central Europe it thrives best on dry, warm, base-rich, nutrient-poor loess and clay soils . In Central Europe it is a character species of the order Festucetalia valesiacae, but also occurs in societies of the Xerobromion or Koelerion glaucae associations.

Systematics

Euphorbia seguieriana was first published in 1770 by Noël Martin Joseph de Necker . The specific epithet seguieriana honors the French archaeologist and botanist Jean François Séguier (1703–1784).

The following subspecies can be distinguished:

  • Euphorbia seguieriana subsp. Hohenackeri (Boiss.) Rech. f. (Syn .: Euphorbia Hohenackeri Hochst. Ex Boiss. ): It occurs from eastern Turkey to the Caucasus .
  • Euphorbia seguieriana subsp. niciciana (Borbás ex Novák) Rech. f. (Syn .: Euphorbia niciciana Borbás ex Novák , Euphorbia seguieriana var.
