The reserve Seitel is a nature reserve in the natural area Northern Upper Rhine valley in Baden-Wuerttemberg and the smallest conservation area in the district of Rastatt.

The nature reserve is located in the municipality of Elchesheim-Illingen, southwest of the Elchesheim district.

history

In the clay and loam pit that was abandoned many years ago, an extremely diverse wetland area was able to develop.

description

The area was designated as a nature reserve by ordinance on November 27, 1991 by the Karlsruhe Regional Council and has an area of ​​5 hectares. It is listed under the protected area number 2.039 and is classified in IUCN Category IV as a biotope and species protection area. The CDDA code is 82584 and also corresponds to the WDPA ID .

The main protection purpose is the maintenance and care of a wetland typical of the former floodplain of the Upper Rhine with its drier edge zones and its highly differentiated meadow communities.

In a very small space, there are typical, diverse landscape elements for the Rhine lowlands and a shallow pond with constant water.

Flora and fauna

Despite the small area, some peculiarities can be found or found, such as one of the more important tree frog occurrences in the greater Karlsruhe area and also the reed warbler , which in contrast to its smaller relatives prefers larger bodies of water and reed beds, had two out of seven breeding occurrences between Iffezheim in the south and here Karlsruhe in the north. The flesh-colored orchid also had a retreat here, the largest occurrence of which in the local district near Wintersdorf Baggersee with several hundred plants was destroyed by a solar park.
