For Lichtenau and Rheinmünster, an area of 230.2 hectares has been designated as a nature reserve under the identification number 2.206 since December 18, 1996 . It is a part of the landscape that was "created by the former dynamism of the Rhine". There are “ ecologically valuable and characteristic forest areas characterized by the different levels of moisture” and “naturally occurring bodies of water with characteristic vegetation as a habitat for endangered animal communities. Artificial waters are intended to increase the biotope and species diversity. "
With the same ordinance, the adjacent landscape protection area “Lichtenauer Rheinniederung” was designated, which puts another 208 hectares under protection.
