The gravel pit at Hardtwald Durmersheim is a nature reserve in the Hardtebenen natural area in Baden-Württemberg .
geography
The nature reserve lies on the territory of the municipality of Durmersheim .
history
The pit was created as a dry excavation by the building materials works in Durmersheim. Since the end of 1989, wet dredging has been carried out on a part of the area, even beyond the point in time when it was placed under protection, accompanied by landscape conservation planning, which is intended to ensure optimal interlinking of different locations. This early designation as a nature reserve during the dismantling period is intended to anticipate any other use of the water and give priority to the protection of species and biotopes.
geology
This pit is located in the former drift sand and dune areas between the Rhine and Kinzig-Murg-Rinne, which are used for agriculture today. The lime-free, gravelly sands deposited on the lower terrace of the Rhine are of interest to the construction industry. With the excavation, new locations have been created, especially for the dune and sandy grass vegetation that has practically disappeared today.
description
The area was designated as a nature reserve by ordinance of November 27, 1991 by the Karlsruhe Regional Council and has an area of 27 hectares. It is listed under the protected area number 2.144 and is classified in IUCN Category IV as a biotope and species protection area. The CDDA code is 164072 and also corresponds to the WDPA ID .
The main protection purpose is to secure the area with its moist to extremely dry areas as a pioneer site with different stages of succession.
Flora and fauna
In the secondary biotope, which has developed into a valuable replacement area for former inland dunes and drifting sands, there are already numerous species of bees, digger wasps and wasps (stinging voices). About a third of the species from this group found in the area are digger wasps, including three species on the Red List, all of which are characteristic species of inland dunes and drifting sands. With 40%, the wild bees are the most species-rich group of the Stechimmen in the area. Among the wild bees found, Anthophora bimaculata is one of the outspoken specialists for dunes and drifting sands. In Baden-Württemberg it was found in only four other places. Little ringed plover and sand martin have long been regular breeders in the area.
On the bottom of the pit there is a feather fescue lawn with endangered species such as black fox fescue ( Vulpia bromoides ), mouse-tail fescue ( Vulpia mynros ), carnation oats ( Arva carophyllea ) and feltwort species . Cattails ( Typha latifolia ), reeds ( Phragmites communis ) and floating pondweed ( Potamogeton natans ) can be found in wet areas .
On the flat slopes of the pit, open raw soil areas alternate with shrubbery sections and other lean and dry locations such as oat stands.
