location

The nature reserve is located in the Stromberg-Heuchelberg Nature Park on a vineyard slope southeast of Diefenbach (district of the municipality of Sternenfels). The NSG is part of the FFH area 7018-341 "Stromberg".

Protection purpose

For ecological and scientific reasons, an essential protection purpose is the preservation of the mountain top of the Mettenberg with its natural oak forest (Luzulo-Quercetum) and its steppe heather meadows in their uniqueness, diversity and beauty. The need for protection is particularly based on:

  • the importance of the area as a habitat of species-rich plant and animal communities;
  • the importance of the area as a site of rare and endangered plant species as Anemone sylvestris ( Anemone sylvestris ), Campion ( Lychnis viscaria ) and Speierling ( Sorbus Demestica ).

Animal and plant species

The Diefenbacher Mettenberg, which was temporarily secured in 1969 in the run-up to a reorganization of the vineyards and declared a nature reserve in 1979, is home to a large number of rare and endangered animal and plant species. Sand poppy ( Papaver argemone ), beautiful pippau ( Crepis pulchra ), sprouting rock carnation ( Petrorhagia prolifera ) and small-fruited camelina ( Camelina microcarpa ) can be found on the open soils of the slope edge .

The rough lawns are home to many treasures, such as the local orchids pyramid dogwort ( Orchis pyramidalis ), helmet orchid ( Orchis militaris ), purple orchid ( Orchis pupurea ) and buck 's tongue ( Himantoglossum hircinum ).

Other types of semi-arid grassland and fringes such as gentian ( Gentiana cruciata ), blood-red cranesbill ( Geranium sanguineum ), mountain clover ( Trifolium montanum ) and hill clover ( Trifolium alpestre ) emphasize the importance of the area.

Wire Schmiele ( Deschampsia flexuosa ) is typical of the acidic oak-hornbeam forest . Färber's notch ( Serratula tinctoria ) is a special feature . The Diefenbacher Mettenberg is the habitat of Bechstein's bat ( Myotis bechsteinii ), stag beetle ( Lucanus cervus ) and Russian bear ( Euplagia quadripunctaria ).

Maintenance measures

Protection and maintenance measures are laid down in a maintenance and development plan and by individual orders from the higher nature conservation authority (Karlsruhe Regional Council). At the edge of the forest and in the steppe lawns, parts of the area are mowed and any trees that emerge are removed.
