The Beautiful Pippau ( Crepis pulchra ) is a plant from the genus Pippau ( Crepis ) in family of Compositae (Asteraceae).

The Schöne Pippau is an annual herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 5 to 100 cm. The upright, angular stem is hairy in the lower part and glabrous in the upper part. The basal leaves have a leaf blade that is 3 to 16 cm long and 1 to 3 cm wide and lanceolate with a narrowed blade base and they are cupped or toothed to pinnate, rarely with entire margins. The lower stem leaves are lanceolate and less divided than the basal leaves. The upper stem leaves are linear and sit on the stem with a truncated or arrow-shaped base.

The cup-shaped partial inflorescences stand together in an umbel-shaped overall inflorescence . The flower heads are quite small with a diameter of 15 to 17 mm. The basket shell is 5 to 8 mm long and 3 to 6 mm wide. The achenes are ten to twelve-ribbed; they are all uniform or the inner ones are different from the outer ones. Then the outer achenes, unlike the inner ones, have no pappus.

The flowering period is between June and July. The flower heads are only open in the morning; in Innsbruck, for example, they open between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. and close between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 8.

Occurrence

The distribution area of ​​the beautiful Pippau includes Europe, North Africa, Western Asia , Central Asia and Pakistan. In Europe, the Schöne Pippau occurs from southern Europe to central Europe and Eastern Europe, further north it is only inconsistently carried away.

The Schöne Pippau thrives on moderately fresh, nutrient-rich, mostly calcareous clay or loess soils , on paths, on the edges of fields and in vineyards. The beautiful Pippau is an order character of the Onopordetalia, but also occurs in the Conyzo-Lactucetum from the Sisymbrion association or in societies of the Fumario-Euphorbion association.
