history

Early history

Östringen was first mentioned in a document in 764 in the so-called Codex Laureshamensis of the Lorsch monastery . In 769, Odenheim was first mentioned as Otemheim in this codex .

During the time of the tribal duchies , the place belonged to the Duchy of Franconia .

In the 10th and 11th centuries, the large moth Wigoldesberg near Eichelberg was the administrative seat of the Kraichgaugrafen . During their tenure as Gaugrafen, the Counts of Lauffen moved the administrative seat to the Gaugrafenburg near Bretten after 1103 , and Bishop Bruno von Trier founded a monastery with Hirsau statutes around 1110 to 1118 with the consent of his brother Boppo (III.) Von Lauffen on Wigoldesberg . They guaranteed the Counts of Lauffen inheritable bailiwick rights. Before the middle of the 12th century the monastery was moved to its final location in a valley two kilometers away.

The history of the settlements is closely linked to the monastery. In connection with this, the Tiefenbach settlement was first mentioned as Tiephenbach in 1122 and the Eichelberg settlement in 1161. Viticulture, which the monks introduced here, played a major role in economic development. In 1496 the monastery was converted into a secular, noble knightly monastery.

19th and 20th centuries

In the 19th century, a flourishing cigar industry developed in Östringen and Odenheim. In Eichelberg and Tiefenbach, agriculture, especially viticulture, remained predominant.

As part of the municipal reform in Baden-Württemberg , the two municipalities of Eichelberg and Tiefenbach were incorporated on January 1, 1972. On January 1, 1974, Odenheim was incorporated. On July 11, 1981, Östringen was raised to the status of a city by the then Interior Minister of Baden-Württemberg and later Federal President Roman Herzog . In the core town of Östringen, around 7200 inhabitants live on 1624 hectares.

Since 1998 the Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft's light rail has been running from Karlsruhe main station via Bruchsal to Odenheim.

Odenheim

Odenheim has around 3700 inhabitants on around 2100 hectares and has belonged to Östringen since January 1st, 1974.

Odenheim is located in the Katzbachtal in the middle of the Kraichgau hill country. Odenheim is first mentioned in documents in 769. The place is located on an old Roman road and was probably a meeting place for district assemblies as early as Germanic times. In the Franconian settlement period, various settlements were founded from Odenheim as the central location, but these have now disappeared except for Tiefenbach and Eichelberg. From the 12th century onwards, the history of Odenheim was closely linked to the nearby Benedictine monastery of Wigoldsberg, which later became the knightly monastery of Odenheim . According to the Nibelungen legend, Siegfried's murder could have taken place near the Siegfriedsbrunnen in Odenheim .

Odenheim came to Baden due to the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss and the dissolution of the Hochstift Speyer in 1803 and was the seat of the Odenheim office from 1803 to 1807 .

Today's townscape of Odenheim is characterized by the St. Michaelskirche standing on the Kirchberg and the old town hall in the middle of the town.

Odenheim is the only district in the municipality of Östringen to have a train station . The S 31 line of the Karlsruher Verkehrsverbund (KVV) runs every hour on the Odenheim-Karlsruhe route. Every 20 minutes during rush hour.

Tiefenbach was first mentioned in 1122 in connection with the Wigoldesberg monastery, today's nearby Stifterhof. With a total area of approx. 917 hectares and over 1300 inhabitants, Tiefenbach is the third largest part of the entire city of Östringen. The highest point is the Kreuzberg at 290 meters. The townscape is shaped by the Catholic parish church of St. Johannes. In addition to wine and fruit growing, the place is mainly known for its varied gastronomy, a golf course and the ideal recreational opportunities. The idyllic Kreuzbergsee invites you to hike and relax. Thanks to a well-developed network of cycle paths, Tiefenbach is a popular destination for families and amateur athletes. Since 1990, the "Tiefenbacher Village Festival" has been held every two years.
