history

The first traces of settlement in today's Kronau municipality go back to the Neolithic Age . At the boundary of the district near the Heidelberg – Karlsruhe railway line, shards of vessels made by the band ceramists , tools made of flint and bones from domestic animals were found during gravel mining on an oval two-hectare dune . As on the nearby Michaelsberg near Bruchsal, the first arable farmers and cattle breeders lived here on an island protected from the floods of the branches of the Rhine. Some graves from the 4th century BC As well as Roman seals and coins with the image of Antoninus Pius (138–161 AD) testify to the almost uninterrupted use of land in this area, long before the first written record of the village in the "Grünen Au" was recorded .

In 1056, Emperor Heinrich III. the area of the Speyer Church. The first written mention of Kronau dates back to 1289. However, a village settlement probably developed long before the turn of the first millennium. The Speyer Monastery has subordinated this to its nearby Kislau office. At that time the Kronau farmers found it difficult to get the taxes out of the poor sandy soil. Nevertheless, agriculture and daily wages remained the only sources of income for the people. The community name has changed several times over the centuries, but without losing the connection to the Green Au.

A cigar industry developed in 1867, which flourished in the 1920s. During the Second World War , French troops captured Kronau on April 2, 1945. With the opening of the motorway access in autumn 1958, the community experienced an industrial boom. This accelerated through the extension of the new commercial and industrial area Heidig to the old industrial area Althäuser .

Kronau is now a residential and work community between the centers of the Middle Upper Rhine and Rhine-Neckar regions. The population development is characterized by continuous growth. In 1970 Kronau still had 4295 inhabitants, now there are almost 5700.
