The Ludwig Guttmann School Karlsbad is a special educational and advisory center with a focus on physical and motor development in the Baden community of Karlsbad . Until 2008, the school was called the School for the Physically Disabled, on the occasion of its 25th anniversary, the school community chose the neurologist Ludwig Guttmann as the namesake. Guttmann was a great promoter of disabled sports.

history

The school for the physically handicapped in Karlsruhe is one of the forerunners of the Ludwig Guttmann School . Since capacities were limited and the school was already spread over several locations in Karlsruhe, the city districts of Karlsruhe, Pforzheim and Baden-Baden , as well as the districts of Karlsruhe , Calw , Rastatt and the Enzkreis decided to set up a national school. The Karlsbad- Langensteinbach location was chosen because it was roughly the geographical center of the city and rural districts involved. In April 1974, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Culture approved the establishment of the school with the educational programs of the school for the learning disabled (today the focus is on learning), the school for the mentally handicapped (today the focus is on intellectual development) and the primary and secondary school. In April 1983 the company moved from Karlsruhe to Karlsbad.

Enzkreis and Stadtkreis Pforzheim withdrew from sponsorship in 2013 , so that the school is now sponsored by the districts of Karlsruhe, Calw and Rastatt as well as the cities of Karlsruhe and Baden-Baden. The district of Karlsruhe takes the lead and takes on the tasks of the school administration , such as hiring non-teaching staff. The city and rural districts involved pay for the upkeep of the school on a pro rata basis, depending on the number of students in their area.

Conception

The student body of the Ludwig Guttmann School is characterized by its heterogeneity . In the beginning, classes were formed, as was customary at the time, according to the abilities of the individual students. As a result, classes with students with complex disabilities often lacked liveliness. To counter this, the block team concept was developed at the school. From 1986 on, schoolchildren were divided into block teams based on their age groups, creating groups that differed in their disability-specific needs.

A team consists of between 12 and 14 students who are taught by a joint team of employees in two adjacent classrooms. According to the school principle, as much community as possible - as much being for oneself as necessary and the student-specific needs, the lessons take place in learning groups, in the whole team or as individual support.

In addition to special school teachers , specialist teachers with a focus on mental development or physical and motor development, primary and secondary school teachers as well as religion teachers teach at the Ludwig-Guttmann-Schule . Nurses , curative educators , youth and home educators, educators , as well as unskilled workers and graduates of a voluntary social year and the federal voluntary service work for care and nursing .

Branch offices

In 1988 the first branch in Wikingerstraße in Karlsbad-Langensteinbach was opened. In a rented apartment, practical life lessons were held there for workshop students. Today, vocational school students are taught there in two apartments and a workshop.

The catchment area of the Ludwig Guttmann School covers about a third of the administrative district of North Baden , the entire area of the districts of Karlsruhe and Rastatt, the cities of Karlsruhe and Baden-Baden, and the northern part of the district of Calw. In order to shorten the journeys of the schoolchildren, external classes and branch offices were created from 2002 to enable schooling of pupils of the elementary level close to their home. The parent company in Langensteinbach developed as a regional competence center for secondary and vocational school students.

The first outside class was set up in Rastatt in 2002 , and by the 2006/2007 school year it became a branch with around 30 students. After the lease in Rastatt was not extended, the branch office moved into a new building attached to the special needs education and advice center with the focus on learning at the Erich Kästner School in Gaggenau .

Also in 2002, the Moltkestraße branch was set up at the Reha-Südwest dormitory in Moltkestraße and Karlsruhe. Children with complex disabilities live in the dormitory and are educated in containers in the immediate vicinity .

In 2003 the first outside classes were set up at the Erich-Kästner-Schule Kronau primary and secondary school . From the 2009/2010 school year, students from the Ludwig Guttmann School attended classes at the Werkrealschule and thus had the opportunity to take the Werkrealschule exam. From the school year 2012/2013 this was continued as a school experiment. The model was seen as a successful inclusion concept in the school landscape of Baden-Württemberg and is known as the Kronau model. Minister of Education Schick said in 2010: Kronau shows the way into the future. In 2010 the branch moved into a new building that was attached to the existing school building. Since the beginning of the 2017/2018 school year, no more pupils have been enrolled at the Werkrealschule Kronau. Correspondingly, there is cooperation with the primary school classes or the students in the external classes of the special needs education and counseling center with a focus on intellectual development at the Karl Berberich School in Bruchsal.

particularities

The Friends of the Ludwig Guttmann School financed the construction of a riding therapy area, where experience-oriented riding therapy and hippotherapy have been taking place since 2009 . The development association also provides several minibuses and financed the construction of a school's own forest classroom .

A counseling center for assisted communication is attached to the Ludwig Guttmann School . In addition to in-house advice and training, this offers advice for teachers from other schools, therapists and parents in the supply of electronic and non-electronic communication assistance . In addition, the Special Education Service supports schools that train pupils with special needs with a focus on physical and motor development.

The school's own swimming pool is located in the building in Langensteinbach and offers water shiatsu , among other things .
