The Cologne Cathedral Choir is the only boys' choir in Cologne and the oldest of the four choirs at Cologne Cathedral . Re-founded in 1863 and first performed in public on November 1, 1863, it continues the centuries-old tradition of choral singing at Cologne Cathedral. He is not a boarding school choir, the boys come to rehearsals three times a week in the Kardinal-Höffner-Haus, the choir center of Cologne Cathedral. In the form of designed leisure time in a Christian community that goes beyond pure music-making, care is also taken to ensure that school and choir remain compatible with one another.

tasks

The choir sings regularly in church services in the cathedral and in concerts in and outside the cathedral. The choir's repertoire increasingly takes into account the music for a boys' choir from the Renaissance and Baroque periods without losing sight of the music of the 20th century . There is also collaboration with well-known ensembles of historical performance practice such as Concerto Köln and the Neue Düsseldorfer Hofmusik . Alone or together with the girls' choir at Cologne Cathedral , he works with the most important musical institutions in Cologne: Philharmonic, opera, West German radio , choirs and orchestras in the region.

The choir successfully participated in various national and international choir competitions, most recently in the 6th German Choir Competition in May 2002, where it won 1st prize in the boys' choirs category .

The Cologne Cathedral Choir is a member of the International Choir Association Pueri Cantores , which unites Catholic children's and youth choirs around the world. In 2004, Cologne Cathedral Music organized the 32nd International Choir Festival PUERI CANTORES with 6,000 children and young people in Cologne. Crowned with great success, his closing service was broadcast live on television.

150th anniversary

On November 1, 2013, the 150th anniversary of its foundation was celebrated with a pontifical mass in Cologne Cathedral. The cathedral choir sang the Missa super Dixit Maria by Hans Leo Hassler and the offertory O quam gloriosum by Tomás Luis de Victoria . With these two compositions, the choir first appeared in public on November 1, 1863. Naji Hakim set the words of the 122nd Psalm Laetatus sum to music especially for the Cologne Cathedral as a composition commissioned by the Metropolitan Chapter , which is being prepared for the premiere. The composition is written for a four-part mixed choir with two organs and the optional use of the Pretiosa bell of Cologne Cathedral. Thus, for the first time in modern history, the Metropolitan Chapter gave music for use in the cathedral liturgy. The contract was financed by the Cologne Cathedral Cultural Foundation founded in 2011 . For performances outside Cologne Cathedral, the work can also be played with just one organ.

Tours

Concert tours have so far taken the Cologne Cathedral Choir to other European countries, in October 2002 it undertook its first trip overseas: USA and Mexico. The 2003 concert tour took him to Erfurt, Dresden, Leipzig and Prague in October. He made two guest appearances at the Festival Internazionale di Musica e Arte Sacra in Rome, the first time in 2003 with Johann Sebastian Bach's St. John Passion , the second time in 2006 with a Mozart program.

At the turn of the year 2004/2005 he visited the Holy Land of Israel for the first time together with the girls' choir at Cologne Cathedral .

In May 2006 a concert tour took the choir to Münster, Kiel and Hildesheim. As the defending champion, the choir was not allowed to take part in the 7th German Choir Competition in Kiel, but played the first part of the Long Choir Night in Kiel Castle.

The cathedral choir's second trip to America took the boys and men to Canada (Toronto, Montréal) and the USA (New York City) in autumn 2007.
