Naji Hakim

Naji Subhy Paul Irénée Hakim (born October 31, 1955 in Beirut , arab. ناجي حاك) is a French composer , organist and pianist of Lebanese origin.

Life

Hakim was a student of Jean Langlais and studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Roger Boutry , Jean-Claude Henry, Marcel Bitsch , Rolande Falcinelli , Jaques Castérède and Serge Nigg. In 1983 he received the 1st prize for interpretation at the St Albans International Organ Festival . From 1985 to 1993 he was organist at the Sacre Coeur Basilica in Paris , then as successor to Olivier Messiaen organist at La Trinité (Paris) (1993–2008). He is the theory professor at the Conservatoire National de Région de Boulogne-Billancourt and has been a visiting professor and since 2004 composer in residence at the Royal Academy of Music in London .

He has received prizes at international organ competitions in Haarlem , Beauvais , Lyon , Nuremberg , St Albans , Strasbourg and Rennes . With the Symphonie en Trois Mouvements he won the composition competition of the Amis de l'orgue in 1984 , with The Embrace of Fire in 1986 the first prize at the International Composition Competition for organ in memory of Anton Heiller in Collegedale / Tennessee , and in 1991 the Prix ​​de Composition Musicale André Caplet of the Académie des beaux-arts . In 2002 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of St. Esprit in Kaslik (Lebanon).

2007 he was given by Pope Benedict XVI. awarded the Order of Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice .

Hakim composes orchestral works and instrumental concerts , organ pieces, chamber music , masses and other church music works.
