Joseph Aloys Schmittbaur
Joseph Aloys Schmittbaur (born November 8, 1718 in Bamberg ; † October 24, 1809 in Karlsruhe ) was a German composer , court conductor , instrument maker and music teacher.
Life
Joseph Aloys Schmittbaur received his musical training from the Würzburg court organ builder Johann Philipp Seuffert . He was also a student of Niccolò Jommelli , probably in Bologna. Around 1754 he got a job in the Rastatt court orchestra, where he became concert master in 1759 and music director in 1766. During this time he set German and Italian stage works to music. After the Rastatt orchestra was dissolved, he was concertmaster in the Karlsruhe court orchestra . From January 1775, Schmittbaur was given the position of cathedral music director in Cologne, where he had a lasting impact on conservative musical life through the concerts of the "Musical Academies". Just two years later, after the death of Giacinto Sciatti († 1777), he became court conductor in Karlsruhe, where he helped the band there to achieve a high reputation. Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart said about Schmittbaur: "He is one of the most excellent composers in our country, and only now can you see what the world has long had in him."
Schmittbaur was in demand as an organ expert, he also made replicas of the glass harmonica invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1762 and developed them further. a. for one of his most famous students, the blind Marianne Kirchgeßner .
