Julius von Soden (writer)

Friedrich Julius Heinrich Graf von Soden on Sassanfahrt (* December 4, 1754 in Ansbach ; † July 13, 1831 in Nuremberg ) was a writer , theater director, publicist and politician.

origin

He came from an old patrician family originally resident in Hanover, had moved to Franconia and entered military service here. One of his ancestors, Johann Hermann von Soden (1623–1702), was Professor of Law and Vice Rector at the University of Erfurt . His parents were the margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach Oberstwachtmeister and chamberlain Heinrich Gabriel von Soden and his wife Charlotte von Rauber.

Life

He was elected government councilor in Brandenburg, later a privy councilor and Prussian ambassador to the Franconian Empire in Nuremberg and in 1790 the rank of imperial count. Privatized since 1796, he lived on his estate Sassanfahrt an der Regnitz , directed the Bamberg-Würzburg Theater from 1804 to 1810, then moved to Erlangen and died on July 13, 1831 in Nuremberg. Julius von Soden founded the Bamberg Theater on today's Schillerplatz.

Sassanfart Castle

As a writer, he has made himself known through short stories (e.g. “Franz von Sickingen”, 1808) and a considerable number of dramatic works, of which the latter “Inez de Castro” (1784), “Anna Boley” (1794), “ Doctor Faust, a folk play ”(1797) and“ Virginia ”(1805) should be mentioned. Soden wrote the libretto for ETA Hoffmann's opera Der Trank der Immortlichkeit . Soden also worked as a translator ( Lope de Vega , Cervantes ) and as a political science writer. In 1814 the new edition of the pamphlet Germany , which was heavily edited under his leadership, appeared in its deep humiliation . It was banned during the Napoleonic occupation. The Nuremberg bookseller Johann Philipp Palm , who had published it, was therefore executed in 1806.

In 1824 he became an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
