Karl Friedrich Ludwig Goedeke (also Karl Ludwig Friedrich Goedeke , pseudonyms Ernst Fröhlich and Karl Stahl ; born April 15, 1814 in Celle , † October 27, 1887 in Göttingen ) was a German writer and literary historian . He was the editor of the classic editions for Cotta and became famous for his work on the history of literature, above all for his work Grundriß zur Geschichte der deutschenichtung (1857–1881), which is continued to this day and as “Goedeke” one of the most important collective bibliographies of German literature Research represents. The Goedeke is one of the widely used standard works for antiquarians and book lovers as the most comprehensive encyclopedia of German literary history.

Life

Karl Goedeke was born the son of a master mason. He first attended the grammar school in Celle, then from 1828 the "Royal Pedagogy" in Ilfeld , in order to study philology and history at the University of Göttingen from 1833 to 1838 . His teachers were Georg Friedrich Benecke , the Brothers Grimm , Georg Gottfried Gervinus , Friedrich Dahlmann and Karl Otfried Müller . Goedeke left the university without a degree, after having worked as a journalist for the Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung for the first time in 1837 on the occasion of the protest of the Göttinger Sieben , then also for other newspapers.

In 1838 he returned to his hometown of Celle and wrote here for various North German "newspapers political and literary correspondence, provided reviews and novellist contributions".

In 1842 Goedeke moved to Hanover , began a close friendship with Heinrich Wilhelm Hahn and - even if he was temporarily forced to leave Hanover - published several works at the Hahnsche Verlagbuchhandlung , including the first biography about Baron Adolph Franz Friedrich Ludwig Knigge . In 1843 Goedeke became a member of the Hanover Art Association . From 1845 Goedeke was chief editor at the Hannoversche Morgenzeitung published by Hermann Harrys . Goedeke was district chairman in Hanover; In 1848 he was elected as one of two representatives in the second chamber of the Hanover State Assembly. From 1851 to 1855, Goedeke founded his biographical-bibliographical method of literary studies in Hanover.

In 1859 Goedeke moved back to Göttingen, where he initially worked as a private scholar and from 1862 had the title of honorary doctor of the philosophy faculty of the University of Tübingen . In 1863 he married Sophie Lohmeyer (1828–1905) from Verden, who was 14 years his junior, and in 1873 he was appointed associate professor of literary history in Göttingen.
