Georg Friedrich Benecke (born June 10, 1762 in Mönchsroth , Principality of Öttingen , † August 21, 1844 in Göttingen ) was a German philologist who dealt with German literature of the Middle Ages .

Life

Benecke moved to the University of Göttingen in 1780 , where he became a full professor in 1814 and a sub- librarian in 1815 . In 1830 he was elected a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . Since 1835 he was a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . He died as senior librarian in Göttingen on August 21, 1844. His studies mainly extended to old German and English literature; He was one of the first to make the former a subject of academic lectures. In his writings belonging here, he shows himself to be an astute explainer of Middle High German poets, especially in lexical terms. From 1828 he edited the Göttingen scholarly advertisements with Heeren . Wilhelm Müller and Friedrich Zarncke used his postponed preparatory work for a collection of the Middle High German dictionary in the Middle High German dictionary .
