Friedrich Karl Theodor Zarncke (born July 7, 1825 in Zahrensdorf , † October 15, 1891 in Leipzig ) was a German philologist .

biography

Zarncke's father was a country clergyman in Mecklenburg. After his school days in Rostock, Zarncke studied at the local university from 1844 , but moved to Leipzig a year later , where he mainly heard Gottfried Hermann and Moriz Haupt . In 1846 he went to Berlin , where he was mainly influenced by Karl Lachmann .

In 1850 he was back in Leipzig, where he founded the “Literarisches Centralblatt für Deutschland” and completed his habilitation in 1852. In 1854 he was appointed associate professor, and in 1858 full professor for German language and literature, against resistance from Heinrich Wuttke , who found Zarncke's academic work insufficient for the promotion. His review magazine covered almost all areas of knowledge. She was also in high regard at the time. The estate 249 of Friedrich Zarncke is in the manuscript department of the Leipzig University Library. In addition to a wide variety of internal university matters, it also contains all of the correspondence associated with his journal. After his death, his son Eduard Zarncke initially continued the editorial business. Zarncke was rector of Leipzig University in 1869/70, 1870/71 and 1881/82 . In 1878 he took part in the founding of the Plessavia Leipzig fraternity. In 1890 he became an honorary member of the Red Lion fraternity in Leipzig.

Zarncke had for the university history of Leipzig apart from the purely technical side such as his contributions to Goethe research , Sebastian Brant and others. a. also published volumes of documents on the history of the University of Leipzig since its foundation. They are of fundamental importance for the history of Leipzig university.

Since 1854 he was a member of the Royal Saxon Society for Science . For the transmission of the older academy history in Leipzig, it is very important that Zarncke created a photo album of the academy members and that this collection was also preserved. It is partly in the Leipzig University Archives and partly in the manuscript department of the Leipzig University Library. In 1879 he was accepted as a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

Georg Friedrich Benecke's posthumous preparatory work for a collection of the Middle High German word treasure was used by Wilhelm Müller and Zarncke in the Middle High German dictionary .

His tombstone is in the old Johannisfriedhof Abt. V in Leipzig.
